It's not just the £72K tax due. As this should have been taxed under PAYE, there is also the question of NIC (Employer's share) to add on to this. That should be around £20K, so you're looking at over £90K in total. THEN you can add on interest (at HMRC rates, not commercial rates) and a penalty. The penalty, of up to 100% of the Tax/NIC due can be mitigated by Disclosure, Co-operation, and Size & Gravity.
As our 'arry has denied the charges, but has admitted he has received the money (although denying any wrongdoing(?), you could be looking at double the £90K due if that was all he had to pay.
I've seen people owing far less than that sent down - but then Ken Dodd got off with it!!
