cannot for the life of me see us going into a new season with just three CB's , injury to one and we are in the shite.

But last season we were basically in the same position?

Kompany could not be relied upon to be fit at all, so they had to assume he wouldn't be available and Stones, Laporte and Otamendi would play 99% of the football.

Add in fernandinho being able to slot in with rodri in midfield and we'll be in a similar if not better place than last year.

Agree mate to a certain degree but Stones's form last season was very up and down and Vinny played a good number of games because of it.

We didn't get Fred or Sanchez but it didn't turn out badly for us. So let's hope that this is the same and we identify a decent replacement as we do need a centre back. For what it's worth I think Maguire is underrated on here. Trust in Pep, he'll find an answer. It's a shame for the player as he must know he's going to win things with us and he'll have to hope things go the rags way just to win a cup competition in the next couple of years.

I don't think we are. We can play two CB's without rotation for a fair spell and we have options: there's young guys like Garcia and players like Dinho and Walker can play CB if needed.

Being two senior CB's down would be a problem if it was for an extended period.

Did Pep make any noises about Leroy or Bernardo before they signed?
He did actually, he said "there tremendous talents, he said something similar recently about Rodri, but I can't remember any quotes about maguire, i really don't think we're in for him, but I maybe wrong.

With a squad limited to 17 foreign players and the rest of the 25 English trained then 2 for every position is a bit of a luxury. You want more options up front and 2 keepers minimum so you have to cut back somewhere. Walker can play CB as well as Fern so we have options.

Totally agree that two signings like Wan-Bassaka and Maguire will not turn them into anywhere near title contenders, but i think it would be two decent signings. I think more to the point for me is about us and im not that fussed at all about not getting him, especially at the prices being quoted. Keep Otamendi if we can, get Stones back playing as he was for a season and a half, blood Sandler and Garcia maybe and then in 12 months we will have a clearer picture.

Seems it can't be repeated often enough, to be clear:

Sandler would take a non-HG spot.
If Rodri signs, we have a full house, 17 non-HG. No space for Sandler.

Right now our CBs would be:
Stones, Laporte, Ota.
Maybe Garcia (if ready!?).
Maybe Fern as an option. - This set of CBs might be Pep's choice, but it has a bit of a gamble. Injuries (esp. Laporte) forbidden...

That's it.
If Ota leaves we will definitely sign a proper non-HG replacement.
Stones, Laporte, Sandler, Garcia +Fern wouldn't sound realistic to me.

A HG CB would be an easy option for squad rules as we only had to convince Delph to leave.
But Maguire seems to be the only HG option - and even him seems to very controversial given playing style and price level.

Khaldoon recently said we want to have 2 top players for any position, so 24. But there are the rules:
That means 17 non-HG, 4 association-trained HG - plus 3 U21s or club-trained HG.
Foden is 1, Muric could be 1 but seems to go on loan and Garcia could be 1.

We can only have 4 top CBs now if we sign a HG! Or another non-HG has to leave without replacing (e.g. Danilo), which .
Or we take a litle gamble and give Garcia/Fern a go. I would like this one, but I can't really assess Garcia.

Stones was outstanding alongside Laporte at the start of last season then he took a dip in form, Hes capable of having a partnership alongside Laporte for years to come.
£70m for Harry Maguire is insane.
His separation from his girlfriend, and mother to his daughter, is the main reason for his dip in form. He should recover from it - though I'm not sure how long City will give him.

They wanted him last season as well so I doubt this time it is to spite us.. he is an upgrade on jones and smalling that’s for sure!

For them to go so public with this bid it would suggest they have assurances from the player he would move and probably has already agreed personal terms. That would suggest to me we will not pursue him anymore as it doesn’t go along with our transfer policy.

Be interesting where we go from here as there isn’t any decent hg centre backs, if Laporte was to get injured next season I personally don’t feel comfortable with a stones otamendi partnership against the top sides . Kompany leaving when he did has left us in a bit of a pickle especially if we get the dreaded transfer ban.
Agreed but I don't think Harry is the answer. I really like the look of Jonathan Tah. Tall, young, quick, strong and shouldn't cost the earth.
