Heartburn

Not sure what I have but in the last week or so I have woke up three times choking on stomach acid.
From looking around on the internet it sounds like acid reflux.
When it happens I wake up feeling like I am drowning, then it starts to burn.
I then spend the next few hours trying to cough stuff up off my chest.
@Barcon
This sounds like how I started, do you have a persistent cough in the morning for no apparent reason?
It might be a Hiatus Hernia. Everyone has stomach acid to digest food. You have a flap that allows food down your throat but stops the acid going up. H.H. is when the flap stays open and so, because, at night you are lying down, the acid goes up your throat, hence the drowning. As it's acid it burns your throat so you cough. This is why I'm on omeprazole, it dilutes the acid but somehow I still digest food.

$75 dollars please pay the receptionist on your way out. Next.

the burning can change cells in your throat etc....very very dangerous

The only thing I can think is that I've been eating later at night than I usually do.
The other night when it was at it worst, I had some milk and chocolate at night. Not something I have done for a long time.
A combination of choclate and cream gets me every time after about 8ish. ( no pun intended either...)throw in a few chillis and I'm straight for the Zantac.

When I started drinking at least 3000mls of fluids and stopping gassy drinks, I've had heartburn about 3/5 times in 10 years..

Don’t eat or drink after 21.00.
I find G&T particularly bad.
Try and raise your bed a bit at the headboard end.
Gaviscon is an excellent short term preventative.
You can Google food types to avoid.

I've been taking omeprazole for over 20 years and this week have decided to see if I can stop taking them and replace them with slippery elm supplements. I'm having mixed results. The slippery elm works for a while but it feels like my stomach is filling up with acid too much again. I'll see how it goes for another week or so but have a feeling it'll be back to the omeprazole, which works, hence why I've taken it for so long.
stopping omeprazole takes a while as your body gets used to the effect of producing acids again.
