Hoffenheim (A) Post Match Thread

I agree. We need to sign a defensive midfielder in January. Fernandinho is starting to look a bit slow on the ball against quick sides and Gundogan is just a very average player.
Nail on the head regarding both players. If we try to get through to the summer without getting someone in then the premier league will be in the balance and we can probably forget winning the CL imo.

Never In Doubt :)

Biggest Negatives - huge gaping hole in the middle that Hoffenheim sauntered through repeatedly in the 2nd half - the failure to address DM in the summer is ominous. Otamendi has regressed massively as a footballer and is solidly 4th choice CB.

Biggest Positives - the team always plays to the end now, all of the time, and there is a real desire to win every game. Mahrez looking brighter every game.

Good win and that’s all that matters considering the ref. Good rest now and prep for Sunday, a really good three points that.

He made a mistake on a narrow margin call, cue the tin hat brigade going full idiot.
Did you even watch the match?

@avoidconfusion He called contrived fouls on several chances in the box, just as one of our players was about to make contact with the ball in promising positions. He required a quick throw to be retaken (that would have sent Sane clear into penalty area for a nailed on chance on goal) for no discernible reason. He waived away what was—to most of us, anyway—a stonewall penalty for us (Sane running in, knocking the ball past their keeper, and the keeper catching his leg on the slide). He allowed some very rough challenges on our players in good positions, and generally only gave us fouls when they were in less promising positions (which football stattos with conspiratorial persuasions call metrics-padding, to make it seem like the official was impartial when you view/analyse the match stats later).

He did give us a bit of a let off when only booking Kyle for a bad tackle in the second half, when he could have easily sent him off. By then, though, he may have chosen not to do it so as to cover previous suspect decisions a bit. We will never know.

He was generally either incompetent or corrupt (or both), though.

Sorry but that’s hardly a balanced view is it. Sure he may have made a genuine mistake on the penalty but what about the Sane throw in - there was nothing wrong with that and he pulled it back for no good reason. I know there’s always conspiracy theorists but that ref did not have a good night and he made too many poor decisions to be refereeing at this level. It says it all but Roger East is better than that ref on tonight’s showing.
