Holidays

I did a one day trip to Salzburg from Munich, on a Bayern train ticket which gives you a good discount.

However, we wanted to do the Eagles Nest Tour but the logistics of our time there just didn't fit but I believe is a very good day out, Hitler's gaff in the mountains now has a restaurant and the coach trip to the nest is supposed to give you a stunning Alpine view.

We just did a minibus tour of Salzburg and as you say there's a lot of activity around the Sound of Music and Mozart, beautiful place though.

Munich is a great City, I'd recommend the poster who's going to have a trip to the Olympic park. There a tour of the Stadium, the BMW (plus Mini and Rolls Royce with prototypes) Showroom which is unlike anything else you'll see, it's even got a bar and restaurant. There's also the world's highest rock museum which affords great views as the tower that houses it looks over Munich for miles. There's also a Sea Life Centre, good for a few hours visit.
Wish we had of made time for the Eagles Nest.

We have a crowded holiday schedule this year and had Munich pencilled in for 2026. Then I found out that the Olympic Stadium is closing in October this year for a long renovation so we decided to cram in a visit in July this year. Its so iconic that I really want to see it before the start messing with it (although I'm sure that they'll preserve the look of it).

The stadium and the trip out to see Neuschwanstein Castle are the two big things I am looking forward to.

Hope you have a good time, look out for Lillian Board Way at the Stadium, a tribute to the British athlete who died in Munich in 1970 at the the age of just 22.

Just seen the Olympic Park Tower is closed until 2026, must be refurbishing the area in stages.

I'd never heard of Neuschwanstein Castle until earlier this year when a racehorse named Neuschwsnstein was running and one of the pundits on Racing TV was saying what a fantastic place it is to visit.

I travelled from Innsbruck to Munich on train a few years back - views were spectacular and definitely an area I'd visit again.
Munich itself I preferred the outdoor beer gardens to the halls types. Went to the Olympic stadium and I remember the BMW museum being very close.
The stadium I remember walking around and because of its design you could walk in the tv gantry areas and get a great view. I also recall a small booth like museum explaining in video form the atrack in 1972. So much history in that one place alone.

It's a very interesting place, we were in Berchesgarten for a day and a half and went up to the Eagle's Nest late in the afternoon not sure if we were too late. Luckily we caught the last shuttle bus and made it. The walk along the tunnel to the lift is kinda spooky when you think of the characters who'd been there in WW2. The lift is spectacular and the walk along what was the sun terrace is filled with information plaques. There's a coffee shop outside and the views are just spectacular. Well worth a visit. Plenty of videos on You tube.

Had a look on Google Earth and probably wouldn't be able to visit. Checked the You tube and it's beyond spectacular.

I did Salzburg in January last year for 2 nights and for me it was just OK
Did the cable car up the mountain over looking Salzburg.
I think January in general in Europe is just drab after Christmas/New Year

Planning a trip to Berlin in February with my wife and teenage daughter for three nights. Can anyone recommend a nice, central hotel? Also, what are the must-see things to do while we’re there? Looking forward to any tips!

We spent two nights in Bergamo a couple of weekends ago and it was superb. It helped that it was really sunny on the Saturday. Flight prices were pretty cheap but we did book about 6 months in advance.

Booked two nights in Malaga in January next year where we'll be visiting Antiquera.

Motel One Alexanderplatz, right in the heart of the city near the TV tower.

As for things to see:-
  • Brandenberg gate
  • Museum island and Cathedral - the Domcafe built into the catherdral overlooking the river is great
  • The TV Tower - great views
  • Checkpoint Charlie
  • the East Side Gallery, which has a long stretch of remaining Berlin Wall pieces
  • The Berlin Wall Memorial - don't miss the last piece of the wall that still crosses a street - Bergstrasse, which is slightly to the south of the main area
  • Memorial to the Murdered Jews in Europe
  • An absolute gem is the "old" berlin - I think it's called Nikolaivierel - the area surrounding St Nicholas' Church, sandwiched between the River Spree and the area where the TV tower is. We didn't see it on any video guides and only spotted it from the boat trip we did. It'll be on our video when we get it up on YouTube but we have such a backlog at the moment it won't be until after your trip. Anyway, don't miss this area.
  • Walking up the glass dome of the Reichstag was good- it's free but make sure you book in advance AND take your passport, they are very fussy. We managed to talk our way in with a combination of the name on my credit cards and a photo of my daughter's driving license on her phone but I'd rather have not have had to talk my way through two sets of stern-looking security guards :)
Berlin wasn't something that was on our radar but we absolutely loved it. Hope you all have a great time.

Off to Koh Samui tomorrow meeting the youngest daughter who moved out to Australia for a couple of weeks , can’t wait haven’t seen her for 18 months.
Stopping off in Singapore for a couple of days , any recommendations to see the Arse game or where any blues watch the match .

Are you enjoying it ? Was on my list of future destinations but wasn't sure of how safe it was. Hotels don't seem to
I've been to a lot of places .
Nothing compares to here.
Yes hotels go upto 4 star.
We're in what's regarded as the best on here.
Cost 2 grand bed and breakfast.
You can do it cheaper or there's a couple of all inclusive.
Personally I don't see the point coming here all in
Its so cheap to eat out
go higher than 3 - 4 star.i
