Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

The Rangers pubs and supporters clubs opened their doors to City fans when we played Celtic in the CL a few years ago.
I went to the Scottish cup final in 1979 at Hampden. I was in the queue for the train back to Glasgow Central from Hampden and they heard my accent. I was a City fan come to see the Gers. They loved it and looked after me big time.

The train back to Preston was rammed with Rangers (we had to change to get to Victoria)
Utd had been playing at Wembley and lost to Arsenal I think.

Load of Lancs/Preston reds got off at the same time as us. I've never seen reds leg it as fast.

Rangers didn't like Utd fans back then.

was with the supporters branch on a coach for my first trip to Goodison
Got bricked as soon as coach swung right off the motorway into Liverpool.i can still remember Anita Britton ordering everyone on the bus to " Get down !!" We all ducked in our seats and sure enough the brick was there though the coach sky line window, glass everywhere...
Lost 2nil.we were out classed,in front of a vociferous 50k home crowd.
Everton at the time were one of the most powerful clubs in Europe and top four of the old First Division....City had a team of young raw home grown talent, which we were proud of,together with a few older heads..mid table in the 2nd division.we had done well
That season was brilliant watching City progress to the quarter finals of both domestic cups and our away support was mental.Loud and Proud.
I was on that coach.

That was a common occurrence going to Goodson. They are just as bad as red dippers but without the you know what mentality.

I went to Hampden for the 89 cup final, was only dropping a mate off in Mcr for the RSC coach but ended up dumping my car and getting on the coach, great day out except for the result but you're right, they don't half look after you if they like you. I drew out Joe Miller to score in the sweep on the way up but I didn't have the heart to claim the prize later because I'd been made so welcome. As it happens we ended up getting off the coach and going for a drink in Glasgow, last train back out of Central was a lively affair.

I went that game on a coach from the main city supporters branch was quite a few mad city fans on my coach ! A couple of jock city fans as well I was about 16 but had a good laugh! Then we got off the coaches at Stanley park then all hell broke loose it was mental ! Coaches getting bricked fights every where! My mate got lost and ended up near the Everton end and they gave him a slap ! He was only 16 and on is own that’s dirty scouse twats for you! Yes they had a great team then never forget the noise that night !

In the mid 70s Rangers played United in a friendly, Rangers took OT over. Docherty Uniteds managed always went to great lengths not to criticise Uniteds hooligan followers, that day he was going.mad saying Rangers must never come back,GMP agreed with him. We had been playing in Yorkshire I think, we were used to rags ambushing us in town on are way back from aways. That night we were drinking in town with the Bears any rags who appeared got battered. They were traumatised afterwards being used to doing what they liked, the reputation of their boys never recovered. Went to a pre season friendly at Ibrox a year or two later was very apprehensive but had a great day the Bears treating us like brothers. They seem more friendly with Chelsea these days but back in the 70s they were mates with City.
In the 70’s , Rangers fans tended to follow both City and Liverpool, however Chelsea became popular in the 80’s which was mainly down to the casual craze of the time.
Nowadays it’s hard to say which clubs are most popular but among the Rangers fanbase it’s no longer Liverpool and never has been Man United.
That game in 74 at Old Trafford was on a day both clubs had been knocked out of their respective cup competitions and therefore had a free weekend. Didn’t really seem like a good idea at the time and so it proved. As well as the street disorder there was people fighting on the pitch and at one point , a large number of Rangers got into the Stretford End. It was big news up here at the time but I guess football was a bit like that back in the day though this was a bit worse than usual.
