Mayhem that day more than 30 each it seemed like , all the way back to the transit we came in there was fighting, one of the biggest firm of city I’ve seen everyone was up for it
I was at the Cardiff City vs. Manchester City FA Cup tie.
I am a Cardiff fan, who lived in Mcr for over 42 years. Saw City first in 1977, getting pipped 0-4 at Derby County. City have always been my second team since then.
My missus and three kids are all City fans, as are the vast majority of my Mcr mates.
Went in two carloads from Mcr for this game, with myself the only Cardiff fan.
We stayed overnight in my hometown, 12 miles away.
Luckily, we saw no actual trouble, but it was an aggressive atmosphere. Cardiff have always had a tough "firm", but loads of extra "lads" turned out for this.
As a FA Cup tie, MCFC had a big allocation (think it was the whole of the Grangetown End) ?
I was with the Cardiff fans, many of whom were not regular supporters and targeted Terry Phelan, who had played for Swansea - who Cardiff fans really hate.
Hopefully, nobody got into serious trouble, but all 8 of us were glad to get to our cars after the match...

We hd the end behind the goal and the top tier of the main stand
A lot of people from Manchester made the journey that night....

Folk wanted to see Mel Machins youngsters take on one of the strongest hardest teams in Europe.

We were only 2nd division mid table,Everton were very well, respected.on and off the pitch..and Top Division.

54k turned up.City standing behind the goal, seats above..and then extra seats in their Main stand..not the whole tier...but a section very high up ..in the gods.

Makes me laugh when Everton take the piss,"no history"etc..
That Tues night at Goodison was brutal, every single City fan who went must have felt the heat at some point.
Our coach got bricked as we turned right off motorway towards football grounds,we'd gone under a bridge
Anita Britton( branch secretary ) shouted " Get Down"..i thought I was in a disco ...,a bit confused,..but everybody ducked as a brick came through the skylight window...welcome to Merseyside
Everton were worried enough about our threat that they had kids on bridges bricking the away support..Anita Britton had sharp eyes,or she'd been there before...

Looking back those days were mental.but I absolutely loved watching us home and away week in week out.

Mel Machins Blue and White Army !!

The two trips to Merseyside for the cup ties in 81 were an interesting experience. Never seen City take so many to Anfield before or since massive firm no one taking a backward step, somehow got back to our trannie van in one piece some mates not so lucky. We gave every bit as good as we got equal numbers of blues and scousers arrested, and equal numbers hospitalised. The scousers reward for their win West Ham at Wembley where they kept a very low profile.
The Everton FA cup quarter final later that year just as bad. City had to fight a combined Everton, Liverpool mob all the way from Lime Street to Goodison. After the match racist Evertonians eager to target black city fans. The following Wednesday night the Cool Cats gave them a warm welcome to Moss Side for the replay. An Everton mate said it was the most scared he had been in his life. An old man now I look back at my youth with fondness but can't believe how I would risk my life to watch a game of footy. Mad bad crazy days. CTID

That Anfield 81 game was the worse I have ever been to for violence. It was a full scale riot with hundreds arrested. Our coach was overturned and we had to get back on the train. Horrific actually. Two stabbed from our coach.

Just out of boredom I checked out who Forest were playing that day and they were actually at Old Trafford in a league game, the same time as our game.
Thanks for checking. I wonder what the game was that day then? Defo another team supporters who did my back window in - not notts county. Still , it was a long time ago and I’m getting on a bit now!

We had a proper battle that day after the game. I remember 30 odd on each side scrapping like fuck in a petrol station. Seemed to go on for ages.
Was there, it seemed to go off for ages. City did Cardiff on that forecourt no doubt. We got our coach escorted out of wales by the old bill. Went from the chaddy tavern on broadway

I only caught the tail end of proper organised mayhem but it must be so hard for young fans to understand what being a match going fan was like in the 80s.
It really was running the gauntlet.

I remember newcastle coming down in 85 when we missed out on promotion and they brought thousands.
Beat us 2-1 i think?

It was just off the scale violence around maine road after. I can vividly recall being in traffic with mobs just leathering shit out of each other . A transit van trapped in traffic with geordies in it having all its windows smashed in and bricks thrown at the occupants

The hoolies of today just dont compare
Think that Newcastle match was 1984.not 85
Score was 2-1 Newcastle.Steve Kinsey scored for us.just looked it up.

That result at Everton means so much to me ,to this day.
Would have loved to have been there. what a performance.what a battle.
Paul Power and Gerry Gow is God got the goals in a brutal match to bring them back to Maine Road...one of my best mates ,who now runs the Chesterfield supporters branch ,was at the replay,on the kippax, his first ever City match! .52k crammed in Maine Road.very little footage of this tremendous occasion...only about 2 mins on You tube.i was so proud of that win.Bobby Mac 2 goals.
Happy Days.

Edit.Fuck off Everton.
Never liked that team.
