Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

Was definitely 2pm Sunday in the 70s, can remember last Jacks as the bell rang at 1.50. Seems archaic now

They were only serving 12-2 on a Sunday afternoon long after the 70s. I didn’t start drinking until about ‘83 and it was those hours for a good while after that.

I’m going to guess very late 80s until it changed to 12-3.

There used to be big queues outside a lot of pubs by 11.45, as no one wanted to miss out on what little time they were open.

Ha, yeah I remember that game. I’d got on a bus back to town on Wilmslow Road with my then girlfriend after the game. The police pulled it over and made a load of the Burnley mob get on to get them away from the trouble and back to Piccadilly. I was shitting it the whole journey!
I remember that game, as I met up with a Burnley-supporting mate of mine beforehand for a beer in the Birch Villa. Obviously, he wasn’t wearing any colours that day and he came from Bury, so his accent didn't really stick out much either. Like us, they were shite in the 90s and I used to go to the odd away game with him, as it was always a good laugh. The two that stick in my mind were their Suicide Squad getting off the train at Crewe and hijacking a bus to take them to the ground, not realizing that it was right next door. The dibble were waiting for them and nicked them all as they were getting off. The other was a Friday night at Prenton Park, stood on that open away end in the pissing rain. As the game kicked off, it seemed strangely quiet on the terrace, then about 10 mins in an artic pulls up on the street outside and about 100 of their lads all pile out of the back of it.

Remember back in the noughties went to a cup tie at Preston on a Sunday think it was 4th round. Arriving by bus from the Fylde found town deserted apart from police everywhere. Went to the blue bell pub on Church St getting there on the stroke of 12 just as the landlord opened the door, not another soul in sight. Ordered two pints and turned to ask my father in law if he wanted crisps and found the pub rammed with City f**k knows where they had all appeared from. Early kick off and a 3 1 win if my memory serves me. Went deep in the country for post match pints, grest day out.

Definitely still 2pm on a Sunday through the 80’s. Playing Sunday League 11am kick offs, most of the lads got the biggest sweat on legging it back to the boozer after the whistle to make last orders.

It’s was mate. Id never heard Maine Road as quiet and concerned when Roy Bailey was helping him.
Yeah it went deadly silent. And when he started having a fit I think everyone froze. Then this big roar came from the away end as they could see the severity of what was happening and he needed urgent attention.

I'll always remember the announcement at half time, that he was awake and with his parents.

Think RB was assisted by the club doctor who had to come racing an from the directors box to help out .
I was on the Kippax that afternoon. Scary time.

I got nicked on the train platform for a game of Benny Hill with the plod. Even though the town centre was like a war zone all evening after the match. Kicking off everywhere. The cells were full of Blues. The fuckers let me out around 4:30am knowing the first train to leave Preston was 5:30am. An hour waiting in the freezing cold at the end of January.

Remember it well. There was a Burnley lad with crutches for some daft reason. It was going off every week at that time and every game would see a mob of City gather on Claremont road, usually getting pushed back to the Claremont by police. I remember Wigan having a good go, Stoke sort of did although they left early which is kind of cheating. Few incidents with Boro around this time.
Wigan had a good go one year I remember, the Sherwood,it had bin a good after match in pub but word got round Wigan were heading for the Sherwood.it just went mental.evil atmosphere...

I do remember drinking in the Claremont a few times on the way to Maine rd, always a tasty pub.Blues would always stand proud outside and all around.always banners and flags, not a friendly pub.just a Blue pub,was my impression.
I much preferred the Sherwood ( great juke box)and the Albert ,post match I was always wasted by the time I got to the Albert, and worrying what train I'd get from Piccadilly...can smell the curry mile now as I think back,..it was strange in the Albert it didn't matter what drama had been going on at Maine rd earlier, they had their own sat nite thing going on.oblivious to the football. Big Paul Bevan and Micky O on the bow ,and top shelfers . some nights the call would go " who fancies a ruby ?!"
Happy Rusholme drinking days!
