Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

That first game of the season at Boothferry Park was mad.
August 88 hull away , I wore my first black leather jacket stood on their terrace in it,and was out at night in rock city later with it, proud as punch
Don't remember any trouble tbh, went in a mini bus got picked up at j.26 M1, Leics and Rugby branch.can still remember Dibble missing the corner.he wasn't clever at corners.leeds away springs to mind another 1nil defeat because the keeper couldn't catch a high cross.
I remember being nervous for years every time we defended a corner
All because dibbo couldn't catch a high ball.did my head in.

They were only serving 12-2 on a Sunday afternoon long after the 70s. I didn’t start drinking until about ‘83 and it was those hours for a good while after that.

I’m going to guess very late 80s until it changed to 12-3.

There used to be big queues outside a lot of pubs by 11.45, as no one wanted to miss out on what little time they were open.
The first time and it was only a one off pubs were open all day was Charlie's royal wedding.

It's always amusing the Screaming Lord Sutch pushed for all day opening after that and finally it happened.

As for hanging about, I well remember especially Sundays standing outside my local (Moss Side) in Ashton in the rain.

Wigan had a good go one year I remember, the Sherwood,it had bin a good after match in pub but word got round Wigan were heading for the Sherwood.it just went mental.evil atmosphere...

I do remember drinking in the Claremont a few times on the way to Maine rd, always a tasty pub.Blues would always stand proud outside and all around.always banners and flags, not a friendly pub.just a Blue pub,was my impression.
I much preferred the Sherwood ( great juke box)and the Albert ,post match I was always wasted by the time I got to the Albert, and worrying what train I'd get from Piccadilly...can smell the curry mile now as I think back,..it was strange in the Albert it didn't matter what drama had been going on at Maine rd earlier, they had their own sat nite thing going on.oblivious to the football. Big Paul Bevan and Micky O on the bow ,and top shelters.. some nights the call would go " who fancies a ruby ?!"
Happy Rusholme drinking days!
Just realised I put “Claremont” when I meant the Sherwood. That was the gathering point.

Was about to say, while there were certainly some pretty handy blokes drank in there, The Claremont was always more a scarfers pub.

United even took it over pre match, in one of the last Maine Road derbies. They’d let it be known that they were going to try and take one of City’s pubs on the Rusholme side of the ground. But they obviously had second thoughts and opted for a safer option in the end.

The Claremont was a pretty tasty pub on non match days. I had a pal round there so used to pop in now and then when I was living in Whalley Range. I don't know about the last Derby but I remember it as a very non-welcoming place to United fans any day of the week.

I used to drink in the Alexandra on Derker in Oldham in the 1970's, three minute walk from where we lived. Landlord was called Ray and he never opened on a Sunday until there was a queue of people banging on the door. He always used to say "Sorry lads didn't realise the time" EVERY week. As an aside, it was demolished years ago and I couldn't believe how small the building footprint was after it had been knocked down!

My mum and dad used to drink in the Claremont most Friday and Saturday nights in the 80s. The laundry ladies from Maine Road used to drink there too. I got a signed shirt from them in the summer of 85.

I remember that. That was the very last MR derby.
