Great thread this. Some memories of things I’d forgotten about! Not glorifying it but would I do it all again then yes I probably would. Some great times and even better friendships made
I am pretty sure I was at the game. It was bad enough keeping looking out for the scousers without getting caught up with the in-fighting. Wasn't there a mob from Cheadle Hulme involved at the time, think they drank in what was then called The Junction, now platform 5?Yes mate it was, don't worry I have trouble remembering, it was one of the biggest City mobs I ever saw mate and they kicked off everywhere they could. They came charging out of Lime Street and were rounded up and held in Lime Street and then asked if they would behave if released, I couldn't believe my ears mate, they stormed into pubs and then the split happened.
I don't know about the Cheadle Hulme mob mate, the train I was on was rammed and I was sat in the coach with the Guvonors and others, I wasn't part of them just sat in the coach with them.I am pretty sure I was at the game. Who were the hundreds or thousands of city fans singing 'town full of pakis' at the likes of Preston or Bradford then if we never had a racist element? NF used to sell papers on forecourt between North and Maine stand. We did have a problem with racism though admittedly not as much as the likes of Leeds, Birmingham, Chelsea etcVery proud of the fact that I have never seen bananas thrown , racist chants, or the booing of black players at City., Not likely to have happened as in those days many of our main boys were black or mixed race. I remember a televised game at the swamp when Cyrille Regis and Laurie Cunningham were booed and racially abused for 90 mins, however in any discussion of racism at the time this was conveniently forgotten. You would see graffiti in Manchester in the seventies showing M U NF C. But you'd never get anyone these days to admit the rags had a problem with racism.
And they were warned off also,in no uncertain terms..Who were the hundreds or thousands of city fans singing 'town full of pakis' at the likes of Preston or Bradford then if we never had a racist element? Birmingham FFS had the most famous black firm in the country along with the Cool Cats, the Zulu Warriors. Surely your mixing them up with Villa.Who were the hundreds or thousands of city fans singing 'town full of pakis' at the likes of Preston or Bradford then if we never had a racist element? That Bradford game was an embarrassment, no doubt about it, but it was very close to kicking off between Blues on the lower tier behind the goal because of that chant. From memory only the stewards/cops removing a couple of the ringleaders cooled it down. Generally though, I don't recall any concerted racist chants from City fans home or away during the 70s and 80s when it was widespread elsewhere. You'd hear the odd individual comment but despite the leafletting the NF didn't get that much of a hold at City in those days.Who were the hundreds or thousands of city fans singing 'town full of pakis' at the likes of Preston or Bradford then if we never had a racist element?
