Hooliganism and Violence Maine Road 80's/early 90's

It was bigger the season after that when city had 1/2 of the lowfields and part of the south stand we won 2 1 with leeds fans trying to get game off
Yes I was at that game 2-1 win. Another ‘massive’ turn out from us after the previous FA Cup game and the Boxing Day 76 league win. Three of the biggest mobs we ever took to Leeds, I was at them all.

The Boxing Day 76 was my first away game. Absolutely chokka behind our goal and (I might be wrong) but I recall a segregated area for us in their Kop? I remember reading later there were about 18K Blues there in an attendance of 48K.

That’s because virtually everytime we’ve played them they’ve been their toes

I never remember them doing much at Maine Road when I was a young teen but they were a different proposition on their own ground.
I remember going to a Leeds v West Brom third replay in the league cup at Maine Road one night, just checked it was October 1978. I originally went down to buy a ticket for a future City game and thought I'd stay and watch this game. It was abysmal and I met a couple of lads I knew from Wythenshawe who were there for a scrap with Leeds. I was in the north stand but we jumped into the Kippax where Leeds were and had a bit of a skirmish with them, they absolutely shit themselves at first lol.
After the game there was a big mob of young City lads led by Debbie and her boyfriend waiting for Leeds. These three big beer monsters with Leeds scarves came across the road, laughed and rolled their sleeves up. Insanity, within seconds they were swamped and got absolutely battered. A bizarre night all round.

What always puzzled me was the how the " background noise" always went eerily quiet seconds before it kicked off. The "background noise" could be chanting, singing, goading, fans gobbing off, or just general chatter between fellow fans. It could be inside or outside the ground, before or after the game, in a pub, on the terraces, walking to the ground, wherever. I called it a mix of experience, being street wise and a 6th sense. Whenever the background noise went eerily quiet, you had a choice......get away asap or be in the thick of it within seconds. Can anyone else relate to this or was it just me?
It's called auditory exclusion. It happens before and during a battle. You don't lose your hearing but your brain prioritizes other body functions it thinks it will need.

Once you've been in a few battles you can just sense when it's about to kick off. That's true even in a pub or club. The atmosphere changes, like an electric charge and you can almost smell it. I think it's the huge adrenaline dump preparing the body for fight or flight being released all at once.
When I was younger if I was out with a girlfriend or in company the people I was with would always think I was psychic as I always got them to move just before it kicked off lol.

You can definitely feel it. I agree with you one hundred percent.
