How can people still be negative about mancini?

How long did it take Ferguson to win the title at United?

Just because we are wealthy doesn't mean we can close the gap on very wealthy rivals straight away. We have tried throwing money at it over the years before eg Swales and Allison and failed. Remember Daley, Reeves and co

Read a post somewhere this morning which said Mancini had won 10 trophies in 9 years at 4 clubs in 2 countries. I haven't checked that out, but it sounds right and is an amazing stat.

He was one of the most succesful managers in the history of Italian football, and Inter had won no domestic trophies for around 15 years before Mancini's first success. He made the modern Inter not Mourinho.

This was ideal preparation for the City job. It must have given him huge self-belief and when everyone is telling you that you are doing it wrong, or your tactics stink, that's what you need. When you look at his CV, he was the ideal and best candidate to break City's 35 year hoodoo.

Some fans want instant success and football played like Barcelona. I suppose we all would like that, but the reality is that that is very very difficult and takes luck, and all types of factors and most of all time.

Mancini has had a phenomenal season and those who aren't big enough to admit they are wrong are as pig-headed as he must be

Great post.

To keep pretending Mancini has done a poor job maneging City you would have to ignore all of the facts.

First trophy in 35 years, need I say more?

I always get sucked into threads like this out of some misguided sense of needing to defend myself. Truth is whether anyone chooses to believe it or not I've never ever in my lifetime been as happy as a City supporter as I am today. Tonight a win could see us into 3rd with only Bolton to navigate. We are genuine contenders and are being spoken about as such. We have a squad packed with top players and the best young players money can buy. Everything is rosy as fuck in my garden.......

I am pig-headed, indeed I am probably about as pig-headed as they come, but even I hold my hands up and congratulate Roberto Mancini.

He has achieved everything he was asked to do and more. So am not going to be churlish and I look forward to future success.

Cheers Roberto

Mate, I'm buzzing, never mind anyone else...I really am. And you're right, when the board see fit, Mancini will go. But I also think that our two different sets of opinions can coexist without one side needing to prove the other side wrong...

This post was getting way too long :-) Let's just agree to disagree and see where we are at end of next season :p

I think Mancini will hit his targets again and also we'll see some more fluid attacking football that every city fan wants to see (just don't expect to see it away at the scum or Chelski :p).

As for his minimum targets, I'd expect them to be
Comfortably 2nd/3rd in PL (must cement that CL place)
quailfy for CL knockout rounds; and a
domestic cup final.

Anything on top for me would be a bonus. Another year later, assuming he's still around, I'd expect PL title or very, very close.

The reason I'm not going for more next year, I still think we are going to bring in 6 or so players and another round of gelling needs to take place but not as much as in previous seasons as I think the team spine is now defined and settled with:

Joe, Vinnie, NDJ, Yaya, Silva, Tevez (if he stays)

There are two arguments I would disagree with;

1: We could have won the league if it wasn't for those pesky tactics.

Simply put, the period when the furore over tactics was at it's height coincided with our rise to second. Our challenge ended at Old Trafford, a game we approached very openly, more or less dominated, and lost. I believe much of the disappointing form that followed that moment resulted from resources and focus being shifted to the cups. And let's be honest, we never entered free fall, in our worst periods we still averaged 1.5 points a game over four games.

and 2:

It's all very well saying 'I'm not going to flip flop on the back of a few results'.... well, at the time, many of the critics used negative predictions of the outcome of the season as the basis for criticisms... we're going to finish 5th, he'll never lead us to success and so on.

I'm under no illusions about the nature fans and our opinions. We suffer, and to alleviate the suffering by venting. I have my own targets.

I am going to piss myself off now and crow about being right. I said repeatedly, repeatedly... Mancini and the team will bounce back because they've always bounced back. You underestimate character like that at your peril. It's far more precious to this club than clean sheets or squad depth.

I guess its a dream come true for all city fans, but in particular (without sounding selfish) more of a dream come true for myself.

I was along with a very few on here backed Mancini since day 1. And in particular it was a gut feeling that I knew he was the one for us. Even whilst Hughes was in charge, I wanted this guy in. Dating back to January 2009 I think. It was just meant to be.

I always thought we fooked up major by employing Hughes. And saturday was the final icing. The guy is Mr Manchester City thru n thru and I have a feeling he will be here for a v long time. There was no way Hughes wouldv got us to where we are now.

I don't think anyone will doubt that Mancini has messed up a few times this season and yes in a fair few games we have played pretty poorly. However it is up to the individual to see what they want to see throughout the season. Some people can remember all too vividly a couple of poor performances whilst others will look at the trophy and a potential 3rd place. I know which I'll remember.

For me this is just the start and that is just about the most exciting thing about all this.
