How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

^Reasonable post for my money... I hope it's another example of the dialogue getting better going forward.

For us, one thing. For the kids.... maybe another.

Plenty of time for me to reflect over the last four years. And the same voice keeps coming back with the same answer.

Your heart, your love, is supposed to lead you to thinking about their opportunities.

Emotions cloud that. Let's be positive tho. As long as people keep talking... the longer we have to accept reality as it happens - rather than fight over what might be.... the opportunity will be there for us as a country to make many things better.
Those in charge refuse to see the problem let alone talk about resolving it.

There are those on here that like to present themselves as ‘reasonable’ and they call for folks to ‘move on’. They like to present those that complain as hardliners that cannot let go.

that’s wrong. If Brexit was a ‘one off’ their argument might have some credibility but in fact those that gave us Brexit are committing ‘crimes’ against the well-being of this Nation every day they are in power (see above for the latest in broken promises, this time by Truss who is being lined up as our next Prime Minister). No bloody wonder some of us continue to be angry, nay, fucking furious at these leaches that will ultimately break the Union and destroy its economy and way of life. Emboldened by a passive voting public who are happy to act as boiled frogs.

Couldn’t agree with this more. I was never a political hardliner. I was never even that engaged or interested. I’ve voted for more than one party in my time.

But this act is so big, so damaging, so stupid, so permanent and so fucking unnecessary that it had pushed me into becoming politically angry and horrified and that won’t leave me at all. The truth is that practically every embarrasing thing going on in British politics can be traced back to Brexit. It was even more damaging than the worst predictions. I don’t remember anyone saying we would become taken over completely by morons.

Fuck those who brought this in the UK and fuck those who still fall for it.

Not sure that's possible Dave, the worst predictions were practically Armageddon. It's been handled appallingly so far and we're a long way from that.

A smaller economy, less international trade, problems with travel, less choice in shops, crops rotting in fields, livestock being culled, sewage in rivers, fishing decimated, less inward investment, assets going abroad, inferior trade deals, expats unable to stay where they want, not enough seasonal workers, NHS / Social care staffing crises, threat to GFA, contributor to excessive inflation, threat to the union, less international influence.

Not sure what could make it worse. I suppose we’ll find out when we start having to check imports properly and interest payments on debt continue to break records leaving even less for public services.

Political Armageddon?
Social Armageddon?
Economic Armageddon?
What shape is Armageddon?
How long does Armageddon take?
Do you know when you’re in Armageddon?

We know why, but we could have become an ex EU country but not had a shit agreement with the EU that makes everything worse including passport control. Purely because we have a government driven by anti EU ideology.
What we have is a government which doesn't act in the best interests of the whole of the U.K.
A major decision, to leave the E.U., was left in the hands of the great unwashed.
Unfortunately, those people, in the absence of real guidance and believing the slogan writ large on the side of a bus, to be the truth, were conned.

You could argue that these people had nothing to loose. Never go abroad, no money, living off food banks (even if they have a job), on UC etc; so what difference does it make to them and why should they care if the better off have to queue for 6 hours for a ferry they will never have to catch or a plane they will never go on?

This was probably their way of sticking their fingers up at the system that created them.

Yep. Whilst I’m massively against it, I do understand why people voted for it in the sense they were looking for change. It just happens that being in the EU wasn’t actually the reason why life was shit.

I know quite a few retired well off people that did go aboroad that also voted for it so it’s not one group to blame. Besides the problems are more down to the Brexit deal we agreed rather than Brexit in itself, though that wasn’t a great idea either.

I agree that this has been ‘ footballised’ more is the pity.
Maybe those that vote for politicians with their ‘hearts’ need to engage their brains a little more. It’s not football. Complaining about the ruination of our nation is hardly ‘dipperesque’. Particularly when those in charge refuse even to acknowledge there is a problem.
I did not intend to imply that people who voted with their hearts did not think, merely they arrived at a more nuanced decision using emotions as well.
The use of sporting metaphors is really quite common (Howe and his "broken bat's" remarks was the end for Thatcher) and the football analogies were meant to illuminate not trivialise.
There seems to be very little faith in the ability of our own parliament to be able to regulate and legislate for this country, and we have a desperate need to have another layer of these intellectual giants in Brussels to rule us. All politicians and Bureaucrats will inevitably want ever more power and are very loathe to give it up. Believe me every town and village in France has closed shops and dying High Streets, there is plenty of social unrest, and all the ills we think are exclusive to us because of Brexit are spread across most of Europe.
In a nutshell my own feeling is for what it's worth,
Common Market good
E. U. Super State bad
Anyway enough already, I'm off to the match day thread for some measured, calm reflection.
