How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

winner winner chicken d.....oh......

The thing is, this never resonates with Brexit voters because none of them ever actually had a specific reason to leave the EU, they just knew it would be better because that’s what they’d been told for 40 years.

So they can say “oh yeah well ending free movement has turned out to be a bit shit but it’s only a tiny part of Brexit and a price worth paying for ending illegal immigration, getting control of our laws, funding the NHS, the economy, trade deals, not joinging the EU Army or whatever other bollocks they can remember from 2016.

And sure, if you deconstruct each branch of Brexit and point out every part of it is failing, they might start to think it was a mistake, but that’s not how the news works, we only ever get to see one horrendous fuck up at a time.

Add in 'I actually voted for reform within the EU as it was getting bloated' (not an option AFAIK).
That's now btw. The earlier arrogance of sending Europe's Final Countdown youtube vids has subsided.

This is from a friend who actively worked in Europe for most of his 20's, has a well paid job (with a European company) and an intelligent lad, but we all have Achilles heels.
It's complex of course, but some are doubling down on their choice (hence the 'I've had enough of ALL politicians/they all have their snouts in the trough etc).

I listened to that driving to fishing. What an absolute gold plated cretin he is. LBC are better than that, they should sack him.
Just another pillock in a long line of pillocks who contribution to anything is to spoil it for the listener or viewer.

On the point of not being in the single market, what delays exist for other countries who aren't in the single market. I think it would suit the French and the EU to have a situation like this to show that any country that wished to leave would end up in a bit of a kerfuffle, and, of course, no one on the planet comes anywhere near the French for being bloody minded! They are experts, years of honing the skill, Jeez, the very word, bureaucracy was minted somewhere in a Parisian arrondissement! Get a 'fonctionnaire' on a French border . . . . . . . .!

Not clear from your post who you think the pillock is. The caller or Castle?

The main point the caller was making was don't blame the french, we brought this on ourselves. I have experienced similar delays when entering USA, Canada....Travellers from 3rd Countries certainly often suffer horrendous delays when they enter the UK.

You seem to disagree with that proposition and agree with Castle.

It’s partially correct that Brexit does not automatically mean longer delays at ports and airports. However it would mean that additional infrastructure would be needed to spread the additional load which also means more staffing and higher cost. So if we don’t want the delays we have to get used to paying extra for the service, and if another country is involved like in this case they have every right to expect for us to pay their additional costs. It was us that voted for it after all not them.

I think Castle is the pillock, and then there's the French. It's a balls up every way round.

It doesn’t suit the French. The French want people in their country spending Euros.

Stamping passports, checking passports, and then there are biometric tests and controls to come, are a pain. Most countries don’t want this nonsense as it is costly and a barrier to trade which is why European countries over the decades worked to abolish internal borders for the movement of people.

But because they did abolish internal borders, they needed to make sure external borders were well protected to assuage peoples fears that ‘anyone could get in’. Well, we are now the ‘anyone’ from an EU perspective, and we, as in the UK, wanted passports stamped and checked. We just didn’t expect the EU to reciprocate. The UK won’t even let school kids in from EU without passports.

We are going to have to invest heavily in the Dover infrastructure, especially when there is biometric testing, otherwise we are vulnerable to long delays every time there is a glitch. We need more buildings, more staff, access roads, the lot. Doing it on the cheap won’t cut it. Brexit is expensive in case you hadn’t noticed. To be fair, the Govt hasn’t either.

Nobody wants it - which is why the rest of the world is negotiating among themselves busily trying to set up and join blocs for themselves because it eases trade, movement of people and movement of goods. As everyone keeps saying this debacle is all made here in the UK from our involvement in drawing up 3rd country rules to our govt insistence on getting the passports stamped in and out.

Its also our govt's own doing not to invest in infrastructure there - in all honesty they couldn't do it and keep up the myths they were peddling. You can hardly maintain the myth of seamless trade whilst taking questions on my you are spending hundreds of millions on new infrastructure which you tell us we won't need. So they took the easy way out and just lied.

It could have been done but only if they wanted to

Feels like the newsreaders are being brazen when Brexit is mentioned on the national news.

Brazen Brexit
