How many games can we realistically afford to lose?

It's usually around 4-5 losses that you can afford to make in a season, I don't think that will apply this season though with the amount of top competition in the league, in fact I see this season being one of the lowest ever points totals if not the lowest points total ever to win the Premier League.

I think there will only be 5-8 points difference between the the champion and Europa League position winner as well.
Totally agree with this. It's going to be an epic season.

Bang on ... it's the most competitive premier league ever ... in terms of quality at the top and in the lower regions of the table. Really I can only begin to imagine how tense this place is going to be in the new year if there's a five way race for the title with a hair's breadth between all the teams.

If that happens I think there will be an epidemic breakout of Mavis Riley-style fretting.

It's a shame that some supporters do not have the stomach for the fight. Probably the same ones that were "dreading" the Derby.

Personally I love being at the top table with all the challenges it presents. It would all be a lot duller if it was straightforward.

I think between now and Christmas the challenge is to stay in the title race and qualify for the knock stages of the CL ... if we do that then we have the springboard to real glory going into the new year.

But yes ... being involved in something like the race which is seemingly going to unfold this season is exhilarating if a little stressful from a forum point of view ... ;)

Can't say I've seen much quality at all. The best has come from us in our better moments but even so, it's still well below our best from the 11/12 season.

Absolutely this mate.
I have book marked the posters who said we will "definitely" win the league this year...I for one would be happy to take top 3 right now. Our away form was sometimes poor under the previous regime but was it this poor? Would we have lost games where we take the lead..I doubt it very much but this all out attacking with a high line is just not working away from home. Putting huge pressure on our home performances. We need to start winning away and very soon. West Ham and Chelsea to come....:-)

I'm actually feeling a lot more optimistic that we can win the league. Long before the season started I tipped Chelsea as I think the squad they've got has drastically underperformed, plus the additions they made, plus the effect on the personnel that Mourinho has for the first two years (that then wears off in the third season), all put together would make them favourites, with us finishing second. However, Chelsea look mediocre, and for some reason loaned out Lukaku and Moses. The rags look even shitter than I imagined, and I just don't believe Arsenal and Spurs have enough quality throughout their squads. This title should be ours unless Chelsea pick up. However, I'm now being told this is 'competitiveness'. No, it isn't. We should be sauntering to this league title. Our main rivals look poor and we've just spent £85m net on attacking players. It should be a dominant title win where we finish clear ahead of every other team. Instead I've just been told that I'm supposed to be happy that we're going to have to battle for this title when the title winning amount of points could be the 78 points we got last season (or the 81 I reckon we would have got with Mancini in charge). This is the improvement is it? We're going to have to fight to stay as good as we were last season (which nearly everyone thought was a disappointing season) after spending £85m net on attacking players... Well no, I'm not fucking happy about that. I don't, as GDM put it, have the stomach for battles we shouldn't be fucking fighting. This shouldn't be World War 2. This should be the US airforce bombing the shit out of Saddam's tanks in the Gulf War.

The overall quality of the PL has been abysmal so far this season. ManU have lost 3 out of 6. Chelsea don't have a striker. We have been sublime at home at times and shocking away. Spurs are bedding in a raft of new signings and scoring on average a goal a game in the league. No team has shown any real, consistent quality in the opening 6 games save perhaps Arsenal if you take out their opening game cock up.

That people are arguing this is the most competitive PL ever is just a way of tarting up the fact that everyone's a bit shit currently. It may make it more exciting but it doesn't disguise the quality of the fare on offer.

I said we will win it,and I'm still sticking by it mate
There's nothing in the league as good as us

Bad management
Bad defending
And poor finishing cost us yesterday
I don't buy into the freak & fluky shit folk are spouting out

I'm sure our away form will click sooner or later.

I'm surprised you, of all posters, has used that particular analogy.

WW2 was much more fertile ground for an interesting narrative than the First Gulf War, which is why they've made so many more great films about it.

Since 2013 we have lost an away game nearly every month apart from January . Are we jinxed in 2013 .
