How would you assess Rodri's season?

I really hope he does come good 2nd season as currently I rate him along side Fernando & Javi Garcia. Just not good enough for the money we shelled out. I would also fancy myself in a sprint against him and I am 53 with a trplacement knee

To the poster who thinks De Jong and Barry were at the same level as Javi Garcia and Fernando - do you even watch football?
The poster never said they were all at the same level. Said that Rodri was not at the level of any of them.

Impressive attitude and has had to play a lot more than expected because of Fernandinho pushing back in defence. He's needed constant support in Gündogan starting next to him so they don't get run over but also had some very very good games. Prem is relentless on pace else he is quality, that's the only issue with him. Aside, very composed on the ball, has a decent shot on him too, aerially quite alright. I am sure he will be better next season.

Sniff sniff

Which is pretty much my point.

Fernandinho miles better than Rodri.

Rodri "needs legs" around him.

Rodri needs "the system" to wrap him in cotton wool.

Rodri needs his arse wiping because he's only 24.

Record fee.

What the fuck were we thinking?
Spot on mate - rags have been saying similar things about Pogba - he needs this that and the other - in other words we paid way over the odds for a limited player - KDB the opposite - the complete midfielder

It's not helping Rodri that we're overstating Fernandinho's impact here (exact same as Jesus with Aguero too). And it's unfair on him for any of us to do that. Obviously Fernandinho has been brilliant for us and will rightly go down in folklore as a legend of the club and an all-time great, but if he was so solely important then 16/17 would have gone much better and 18/19 would have seen a collapse without him.

We probably would have done a bit better with Fernandinho in DM this season, assuming his legs wouldn't have gone. But we would have had all the problems we still had, and we probably would have lost many games in the same fashion too. We still would have had no worthwhile CBs for most of the season. We still would have been vulnerable on the counter. We still would have missed chances up top. And then on top of that we would have had no contingency for next season when it's almost certain Fernandinho wouldn't have had the legs to go for a full season. We would have to have relied on Gundogan, and the way you all talk about him on here makes me think you wouldn't have liked that.

I'd wager that if the exact same Rodri we've had this season was playing for us in 17/18 or 18/19, this thread would be five pages long with most of us in agreement he's top class.

We would have been less vulnerable to the counter with the Dinho of the last few years at DM. Rodri has consistently left massive holes infront of the backline and not had the pace to get back, an issue which has highlighted even more that our available CBs aren't good enough
I don't think Dinho would have been the Dinho of the last few years tho. He looked finished when he played DM against Soton. I dunno if he bulked up a bit to play CB or it's just his age catching up but he looked like he had lost a yard at least

To be fair, we were told the likes of Fernando and Javi Garcia needed time as well. Time isn't always some magical fix, for every Fabinho there is a Jorginho.

Rodri isn't going to get a rest and full preseason this year, the new season is a matter of weeks away. The thought that in a few weeks time, he is going to come back a completely different player, is wishful thinking in the extreme.

He is quite clearly much better than Fernando and Javi Garcia though. He doesn’t need to come back a completely different player, he just needs to settle.

Due to age, height etc, he should be starting over Gundogan as the 6, Gundogan is then backup.

Give him a high energy midfield partners (either as a midfield 2 or 3) and he excels.

I understand the problems of the Gundogan-Rodri pivot as people have pointed out, I'm not gonna spew bullshit that it doesn't have issues, but I will say I think it is effective against very high presses having two 6's to break through high pressure, but probably not something we should proceed with again.

Rodri is a decent player for us only if he gets up to speed with the PL intensity.
First season, he has got caught in possession by dawdling on the ball a bit too much for my liking.
But I expect him to up his game next season. I believe he has the potential.

he reminds me of an English Gareth Barry, who turned out alright for us despite no pace

There’s lots of comments about surrounding him with legs and energy and he’s a much better player, he’s supposed to be the legs and energy for the more attacking players not the other way around. if we’ve got say Bernardo buzzing around covering him on the edge of our box because he’s too slow to do it then what’s the point in Rodri? He’s been carried all season, the only times he’s stood out are against the sides that have wanted a physical aerial battle like Burnley and the premier league thankfully doesn’t have many of them anymore.

Do you not think there is a reason Kante got moved out of position? Its because he is awful on the ball and doesnt fit the possession based style that Chelsea (especially Sarri at the time) want to be. So many posters on here think pace and mobility is the only thing a midfielder needs but will then go and slag off Henderson and say he is dogshit even though he is exactly the player they are describing that we apparently need!!
Great post.
I doth my cap Sir.

Bayern won the CL final with Martinez starting in Centre midfield alongside Schweinsteiger, there is no need for supreme athleticism in the middle.
And John Mcgovern was no supreme athelete.but he won two European cups, and was the first pick in Brian Cloughs side.so under rated by fans who dont appreciate what a holding midfielders task really is.
Rodri is a superb player.in his first season in English football.
Watched him very closely on his debut away at Westham.0-5 City.

Superb player.

People forget that one of our most powerful, invigorating displays of the season was actually Spurs at home early doors, where Rodri should have had a penalty ,and nearly broke the crossbar with an exocet missile of a shot, the like of which we,d not seen since franny lee used to smash em in
I digress...a lot more to come from this lad,and his performance in that spurs game was of course nullified by The cheating Michael Oliver and var. I,m sorry, but when you assess this...or any players contribution,or worth to the team, you have to factor in the down right disgraceful cheating thst has occured, esp early doors.

Those who choose to ignore the cheating are fooling themselves.....utd and liverpool fans dont have that distraction.
We do.
Get behind the blue..

Rodri’s crime is that he isn’t Fernandinho. He’s a good player, but Fernandinho was part of the press from the front and a snuffer out of danger directly in front of the centre halves. In the last few weeks I’ve seen Garcia and Laporte get caught flat footed or unsuccessfully coming forward to close opponents down several times, as deep lying runners then stride through with a 5 yard head start and Rodri trailing somewhere in the wake.
Doesn’t mean there’s no place for Rodri, but his lack of mobility becomes a real issue when he’s got equally slow centre halves behind him and Gundogan alongside him
