Since he returned, we haven't conceded a goal with him in the side, winning two and drawing one.

He isn't there to create. We have plenty of players to do that. He's there to stop the opposition from scoring. And he does it better than anybody else.

Spot on, with De Jong in the side we have had 64% possession in both away games and against a side like Spurs thata quality. De Jong will always be the un sung hero in our side to fans that dont understand the game, i.e if everyone is going forward trying to score and create, who's mopping up the counter attack when the ball comes back at us???

De Jong is one of the first names on the team sheet for a reason. am suprised the OP dosent want Hart out the team, he does fuck all apart from stand between two white post, lazy bastard, he should be up the other end scoring diving headers from corners.[/quote]

Got to be the funniest thing iv ead in a long time. not. sort it out, why be so sarcastic?

I agree with the OP. De Jong is far too limited a player to be part of a midfield three. Each member of the trio is required to have quick feet and excellent passing skills which the other two do (yaya & milner) . I admit he can track a marker at times but you only had to look at his first twenty minutes against Spurs, he gave the ball away constantly. Contrary to popular opinion, he's not a great tackler either, he often mis-times and is reckless.

Everyone loves De Jong's commitment and passion but surely to god you realise his limitations in possession restricted us last season. I fully understand that De Jong is a very, very good player at what he does but Milner, Barry and Toure are all much more balanced players. All three are experienced internationals who all understand that at times they need to hold their positions and at others bomb forward, it just takes a bit of communication. That doesn't mean Big Nige won't get game time because his qualities will be absolutely vital in some games, but we won't always need a specific holding midfielder. It's swings and roundabouts, sometimes Barry will be preferred, others De Jong depending on the opposition, injuries and suspensions.

Just when we were having some positivity and appreciation of an excellent defensive midfielder who does his job perfectly without all the prima donna sulks and hissy fits, distributes the ball a lot better than the "he only passes it sideways numpties" will recognise or admit, gets forward in support and tracks back superbly, breaks play up exceptionally well, and has very good positional awareness - YOU POP UP.
Why is De Jong always the scapegoat - has been brilliant for us since we signed him. He wasn't bought to provide Glen Hoddle style 40 yrd passes, nor to go nutmeging defenders after dribbling around 3 of them before chipping the keeper.

Ok. Id be happy with 2 attacking midfielders in my team yaya and milner can go forward and tackle now if the opposition is breaking away your telling me you would rather see Barry the one to stop them over de jong? De jong holds breaks up attacks covers defenders better than barry giving our attack more power because milner and yaya can run forward and link up alot more.

Right people who argue that NDJ is a requirement to allow other players to express themselves.

Therefore Chelsea and the Rags who have won most trophies recently have a comparable player.

Name them.
Claude Makelele was fairly good for Chelsea when they won 2 league titles on the bounce. Mikkel plays a similar role now.

He has been brilliant for us at times no question.

At the minute he is playing with other midfielders who offer defensive and offensive qualities where as he offers only the one. So for certain games the defensive qualities of Yaya and Milner and maybe Barry will suffice to allow Johnson (for eg) to come in.

Horses for courses and De Jong offers only one quality really.

-- Fri Aug 20, 2010 3:02 pm --
