Playing 3 flat accross the middle is actually more defensive as they are just acting as a defensive screen and have no options other than to play it square. I could kind of see an argument at home to play Barry holding instead of De Jong as we would expect to dominate possession anyway and he uses the ball better. But to suggest we should play a 3 man midfield with no player holding is a bit naiive.

Why is it naaiive? Is it wrong to expect either yaya, barry or milner, whoever is playing in fact, that if a midfield compatriot is attacking maybe they hold? Take it in turns, offer a different threat, keep the opponents guessing. Cant professional players do that or is it imperative that one player, the same player sits and does nothing else? Its not really required anymore as much as it was.

Mikel is the nearest thing at chelsea and he is a first teamer no doubt but by no means an automatic starter - the same as De Jong should be
Well I've never seen a professional team play that system and what would be the advantage to it? If one player is sitting anyway then what is the difference does it make if it's Milner swapping with Barry and Yaya, or De Jong there permanently? It doesn't make any sense.

So people want to drop one of the best defensive midfielders in the World (as proven in SA) because he doesnt create/score enough? Speechless.

I havent seen Joe Harts name on the scoresheet recently so id like to see him replaced by Rene Higuita.

De Jong is quality. End of chat.

Can I just point out that De Jong has scored plenty of goals in his career. He just has been unlucky here. He actually scored 5 goals in 31 appearances for Ajax one season :D . I very rarely see him give the ball away so as long as he's giving it to a fellow blue he's doing his job very well.

Why do we need all of our midfielders to be uber creative? We don't, Nige can and indeed has chipped in in our attack from time to time but generally holds the fort whilst those around him do that job. When Yaya, Milner, Boeteng, Kolarov, Silva, Tevez, Ade (Or Richards, Bridge, Barry, M.Johnson, SWP, AJ, Balotelli depending on who's fit/playing) are all in attack he sits back with Toure and Kompany to stop any quick counter-attacks and he does that better than anyone else in the world in my opinion.

7 in attack with 3 and the goalie back is pretty attacking if you ask me, and if we're up against the likes of Ushited, Chelski, Red Dippers, Arse, Spuds then I'd definitely want De Jong to be one of those 3! It's a simple as that. I actually think he'll get a couple of goals this year, just a hunch ;)

BTW. Claude Makalele scored just 2 goals in 205 appearances for Chelsea and just 1 in 126 for Real Madrid playing this EXACT role. Yet both teams looked lost without him. I'll never forget Real bossing Ushited in the first leg of a chumps league tie once with Claude in place. In the return leg (where Makalele wasn't available) Real looked a mess! Ushited were all over them.
