Well that is one of our fellow posters that understands fuck all about modern football and what make a top team - does not make you a bad person - just a good person that knows fuck all about the modern game - obviously only in my opinion......

If anything, it is the people that think De Jong is one of our best players that know nothing about football - they see him make 1 "blockbuster" tackle a game and think that he is god.

So basically, you want three box-to-box midfielders in the centre? And what happens when they all get a bit giddy and get caught out of position/in possession up the pitch?

Try and see De Jong as an insurance policy. You know that if we do lose the ball up the pitch, or if we do get caught on the counter that he will always be there. He might not be a one man army like Essien, but in the system we are playing this season with the attacking fullbacks, himself particularly as well as the other two central players are the key to making it work.

Firstly Barry is hardly box-to-box - he would much rather just hold outside the area. Yaya would make runs occasionally and milner would always make runs, it would work fine.

Re your response to my point - Sorry - this only reafirms my view - if you think that de jong is anything less than vital in every one of the tough games that we will play this season - you actually are just pig ignorant about moden foorball (don't worry lots of fans of various clubs are - and loads of journos) - as I said - it does not make you a bad person - just one that knows fuck all about modern football - relax - thankfully our manager does - so just enjoy that

De jong isnt here to score goals or even create them..he is here to get stuck in and break down attacks throught the middle..

Any of the so called top 4 would now snap him up...He's one of the reasons Holland got to the world cup final..

I'm not actually sure if you are on a wind up here? Are you seriously suggesting Makelele was a more similar player to Pirlo than he is to De Jong? I sincerely hope you are not suggesting that with a straight face.

Both Pirlo and Makelele's job was to control the pace of the game. Pirlo had the better passing ability than Makelele and Makelele had the better stopping ability, but their job to the team was essentially the same.
I disagree. Alonso, Pirlo and for the last season or so, Scholes have played as deep lying playmakers who do tackle but their strong point is to control the game with their passing and vision. Makelele made the role of the defensive midfield tackler his own and I have heard many commentators actually say that De Jong plays in the "Makelele role". I've never heard that said about Pirlo, Alsonso or Scholes?

Of course Makelele could pass the ball, but he was certainly not known for his cultured 40 yard defense splitting pass like Pirlo is. He is primarily known for his reading of the game, tackling, tactical awareness in filling in for team mates and retaining possession by playing the simple but effective pass. He played in a similar area of the pitch to Pirlo and Alonso, but their roles could hardly be more different.

Speaking to The Independent in 2007 Makelele himself said this:
""It's the ultimate honour to have (the position) named after me, I suppose it shows that I have achieved everything I have worked for," he says. "I really learnt how to play that role at Real Madrid where, if we were losing 1-0, we would say 'Right, lock up shop'. The four at the back and the one in front of them - me - would concentrate only on defence and let the others go and do what they had to up front. They would take the risks, I would take care of the opposition's attacks.

"In every team you need to know what your role is and one of the keys to my role is to keep the balance of the team right. So when Didier [Drogba] goes here, I do this. When Frank [Lampard] goes there, I go there. Same with Michael [Ballack]. When one person moves out of position, then someone else comes in and covers for them.

"When you play in my position you have to enjoy it. You can't be thinking 'Oh fucking hell, I don't get any goals'. You just enjoy it, you enjoy playing football, tackling, giving the ball. Just enjoy it."

He's our Essien..............that is all

Essien, is very good on the ball, very quick, can shoot, scores goals, and creates assists.

All things de jong does not do.

Just simply fucking wrong - Yes I agree that in the role that Nigel plays - Essien is the worlds best - so lets compare that

Essien is No. 1 - but he averages 2 league goals per season in his chelski career - is very low on assists - these (as Bennitez would say) are 'facts'

But he breaks play up and thereby covers the defence - then moves play forward - giving the ball to a CM - like Lampard - who then moves it further forward - he then drops back to break up the next opposition play

Who is No. 2 in the world in the DM role??? I would suggest Nigel - so would Capello given his World Cup ratings - who else could it be???

So we have the number 2 in the world at CITY (at least top 5 unless you know absolutely fuck all about modern football) - and all you can do is slag off - sorry you simply know fuck all about the importance of the DM role and why therefore Nigel is key

I can't be bothered reading every page of this so I'll just post :P All you ''get De Jong out of the team'' people will be gutted and eat your words when he gets an assist and scores in the same game!!!

De Jong is there to do his job and what's his job? STOP GOALS! Where in the description of a defensive midfielder does it say ''box to box'', ''scores goals''? Yes, it's a bonus if he scores but so what if he doesn't and stops goals?

Without Nigel in the team our creativity would suffer. No, Nigel does not add the creativity himself, but he sits back and allows our other creative players do their thing, and he does this very very well. Nigels job is to protect the back 4, break up the oppositions attack, and play a simple passing game in order for our more creative players to get an attack going. It's not his role to score goals or anything of that nature.

He's not as good as Essien to be fair, but nobody is. Essien is the best in the world. Outside of Essien, not many are as good or better then Nigel.

i no people are going to call me for this but lets look at it properly .
he is not box to box .
he also creates nothing .
has no vision .
he will never score .
.now i would also say,,,,, i do like him before the people attack me.....but he surely cant stay in our team just cos he can tackle ...
MILNER.tackles a bit .scores and passes .
yaya. tackle and passes.looks like he would score from midd .
barry.chips in with odd goal now n then .and tackles and passes..
so in all honesty de jong should be left out ..

HALLEFUCKINGLUJAH someone can see what i do
I've been consistent in my opinion that NDJ is crap, the whole Idea of putting a player like him in a team is completely nonsensical !

-- Fri Aug 20, 2010 6:25 pm --

Better at what exactly, Essien is an all round midfielder that can do the lot, De Jong is a squad little man who can't run, shoot or pass and whose lauded tackling is a bloody liability. I wouldn't put NDJ in the 30 midfielders in the prem!

NDJ was one of the best players in the World Cup and would probably be the only City player able to get into any club starting eleven in world football.

-- Fri Aug 20, 2010 10:26 pm --
