Walker is a good defender. Mendy struggled badly initially but I think he has been much better recently. I know he made a terrible mistake at Wolves but it's not yet clear how much more he can improve. I was too impatient when he came back. I think he's doing well now. More to do. Stones was good in 2018/19 alongside Laporte.

I bet if you took VVD out of Liverpool's back 4, then Gomez, Matip, TAA etc would fall to pieces.

As players who happen to be defenders, I agree they're a damn sight better than you'd think from reading their performance threads.

But in the classical sense that if we were having to deal with an onslaught of attacks and the threat of counterattacks then Laporte is the one who has proven himself by far the best equipped to handle those situations.

A back 5 that includes a mix of lovren, matip, mignolet and karius is pretty horrific. Just adding VVD and Alison totally transforms it.

Yeah but they are two very good players who didnt need replacing. Their CB's and GK's were all shockingly bad before they invested in VVD and Alison.

Great news. Eric will be probably available for the second leg in the EFL cup, at least on the bench. Sane will probably start training with the team last week of January. So both Laporte and Sane will be available for Madrid and ready to start the 2nd leg.

This isn’t even on topic so I was minded not to reply and perpetuate this, but as I’m not in work thought a reply was fair enough. Notwithstanding the improvements your data suggests, i was never trying to say VVD hasn’t improved them. I was a) taking issue that they were ‘average’ before him, when the numbers suggest otherwise, and b) that it’s all down to VVD, when I think the two full backs and the goalie have been a huge help too - Marvins post that I was originally promoted to reply too seemed to suggest otherwise.

Let's not rush him back as well, it has to be a slow build up, fifteen minutes here, twenty minutes there etc. We rushed Vinny back too quickly so many times, it ended up ruining him.

Your correct , but Laporte returning the back four releases Dinho back into midfield and that will be a massive improvement
