Irish referendum to repeal Eighth Amendment

Ah right so they're against it in the same way we're against a normal( for want of a better word) murder? Surely a normal person can see it's not the same thing though? Hopefully they vote so women get to chose for themselves, having said that I'm not Irish so it's not really any of my business either ha
A normal person can. People who are obsessed with the baby Jebus can't though.

Anyway...

The problem is (was - now that the referendum is over) that there was only 2 choices....
1. Leave it as it, i.e. Come back with more options later. Or...
2. Change it to what the government of the day think is ok... which many people ( nothing to do with religion) believed was too vague/liberal.

We should have had a one or two more compromising options. A, B, C or D.

But imo the goal for the government and those in favor of a yes vote was not to give the people a true choice but to win and prove the country is ultramodern.

I am in favour of abortion in many circumstances but I hate the fact that we were railroaded by our government again ( just as we have so many times over the past decade or so- regardless of who's the in control).

As the law will be set I honestly believe that many teenage girls will opt for abortions because they feel socially compelled to and that is a real pity for them ( I don't think the babies come into it as they aren't conscious). To me we could have done better for the women of Ireland.

But I'll hope for the best regardless.

Let it go. Welcome to the 21st century. There is only one option and thankfully the people of Ireland have chosen the right one by a landslide.

this will put pressure on the DUP to come into line with the rest of the uk and hopefully ireland

Yep. This is great news but it does leave us on in a bizarre situation where we have one small group of zealots hell bent on keeping one group of British citizens in the dark ages. Even after the rest of Ireland have voted for marriage equality, and even in light of the fact polls indicate most people in NI support marriage equality, the DUP continue to abuse political systems in place to prevent it from happening. It's mad to think that the some of the most draconian abortion rules in the world actually exist on British soil.

Granted I have only lived here for a year but I found the result to be a surprise. Where I live it seemed that No was the loudest voice. Finally those fucking posters can come down and I will no longer be approached by weirdos in the street
