Irish Women’s Team singing pro IRA chant

I never said you were mate - I was just correcting your mistake that there were no casualties in the 1996 Manchester bombing, plus it's a miracle that nobody was killed.

Absolutely no way am I condoning any of the murderous acts committed in the name of British colonialism in Ireland and elsewhere. There was loads of bad shit that went on but we're talking a different era to the modern-day Troubles (the late-60s onwards). A better comparison for you to make would be all the terrorist acts committed by the Loyalists during that time and of course Bloody Sunday. Although I would add that the latter hasn't been forgotten.
That’s a fair point pal. I should of realised what you were trying to say.

No probs mate. I wasn't really having a pop about the "forgotten" Manchester bombing of 1992. Because the later one was a much larger incident, that became the one that everyone tends to talk about just like 9/11 has totally overshadowed the first attack on the WTC 8 years previous.

Lots of frankly embarrassing IRA apologist nonsense on this thread but this takes the biscuit.

“To call the IRA terrorists is to support the propaganda of a military occupation”. Jesus. So blowing up little kids out shopping for football kits in Warrington on a Saturday morning, or murdering people in cold blood at a remembrance service - remembering of course the lives lost in defeating a horrific, evil Nazi regime in WWII - weren’t cowardly terrorist acts then? Those actions were comparable to what the Ukrainians are doing now?

I really do wonder about people.
You think that the British government supported Protestant paramilitary organisations didn’t plant bombs? That the MI6 involvement in occupied Ireland didn’t involve the murder of civilians for political purposes? That shooting live rounds into civilians on Bloody Sunday (etc.) was anything more than an act or terror? That the British government didn’t have inside knowledge of IRA bombs but let British civilians die so as to not blow their intelligence cover?

You honestly think that the many military occupations of the British empire didn’t involve concentration camps, torture and mass murders across the piste?

You need to read more, you’ll be surprised to learn that everywhere we went we murdered our way in and everywhere we stayed was an act of bloody military suppression. Even in modern times it’s been state terrorism at it’s most ugly - from carpet bombing women and children in Afghan villages in biplanes in the early 1900’s, because our forces couldn’t get at the hill fighters resisting our occupation, castrating and killing thousands of innocent men and boys in Kenya (we invented special pliers to tear their testicles off), right through to the heartless and bloody invasion of Iraq murdering hundreds of thousands of civilians to bring down a regime that was guilty of nothing more than selling oil in currencies other than dollars (the dollars value being kept only by it’s association with the price of oil).

Another thought to mull over is that the IRA would never have even formed, never mind bombed anyone, were it not for our army occupying their country.

Like I said, I don’t condone violence of any kind . . but that doesn’t stop me from seeing where the obvious root causes lie.

As someone from Northern Ireland who grew up during the troubles (born in 62) and spent my whole life affected by it. I have good friends who've been murdered, friends who did life for murder and attempted murder. I've had run ins, been bullied and be beaten up because of my religion when younger. Still unable to walk the shortest distance home from pub when home visiting due to walking through area of the opposite religion. I had issues/problems with paramilitaries of both sides including some members of family having days to get out of their house and the area. To me the saddest thing about this particular incident is these girls potentially grew up not aware of the troubles and their impact on families of all sides. It was also wrong (imo) what Kyle Lafferty and other sports stars have done recently. I personally have friends who's daughters play football and been cheering on both teams recently which was a real wpositive step but that seems to have been tarnished a little now imo
That is a brilliant post. The saddest thing is there is a new generation who don’t know or understand their own history. Sectarian hatred is on the way back. I am 63 and know plenty of people whose lives were destroyed by that hatred in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

The rebel songs and anti Catholic songs really dont help either. Even if some are funny.

Pressure from a major sponsor (Sky) from what I heard. Still a load of shit though.

FFS we sing the Fields of Athenry every single game home and away in every fucking sport. That's arguably more offensive.
No not at all offensive to me, I like the fields of Athenrye

I meant beyond the Daily Mail, the Sun and the Express ;-)

Glad it gave you a chuckle though.
I was trying to elaborate to explain my opinion, as I thought that if you knew anything about the sordid crimes against humanity perpetrated by Britain abroad then you’d be a tad more understanding as to why some folk living under British military occupation might kick back against it, albeit in a very small way compared with the suffering served up to them.
And it certainly wasn’t my intention to upset you as you’re a fellow Blue and anyhow, nothing makes an entrenched view dig deeper than pissing someone off.

And, no offence to anyone, but I’m not going to respond again in this thread because IMO regardless of the connection, via the Irish ladies, it was a post match incident that really has no bearing on football and I think it should be in off topic - where I’d avoid it like the plague.
