Is Gaël Clichy that good?

I think Gaels medal haul now and at the end of is career will prove that he is "good".
I find it really so disrespectful that we have a thread about this at all, one of our own players.
This thread title i'd expect on an opposing teams forum.

We cannot have 25 superstars in our squad. Clicy is a v good player, i believe he's a definite keep. Pelligrini has been quoted that he wants 2 players per position. It's not like we have a lot of defending to do

Neither are good enough,at elite level,to be our first choice, hence our need to purchase.

Clichy ticks more boxes as reserve for me.

Agreed. If Gael was that good he'd be starting for France, bare minimum in the squad. The fact that he can't beat out Evra who the Rags have been desperate to replace for the last 3 years and don't think is nearly good enough says it all.

The same French squad that doesn't have Nasri in it.

Says it all really.

But Nasri wasn't left off the squad for on field reasons. The coach and him have personal issues. Gael has no issues off the field just on the field.

Some of you should go back to playing football manager where your opinions are valued. Clichy, Premier League winner x3. Wenger, Mancini and Pellegrini must be clueless or maybe it's your ill thought opinions, I'll leave you to decide.

Last season it was Yaya Toure and Demichelis whose end of season form saw us over the line

In 2011/12 it was Clichy in the run-in. He was amazing.

Last season he had a lot of injury niggles, and he wasn't playing at his best

Look at Kolarov in Mancini's season, to the player he is now. If Luke Shaw is worth £30m, then what's Kolarov worth?

Notice in the tough games when we might need to defend then Clichy starts, Arsenal away, United away, Liverpool away, Everton away, when we more likely to do all the attacking Kolorov plays, perfect mix for me.

This, as good as Kolarov was is speaks volumes that he was played in nearly all the big games away.

I honestly was thinking we'd move for baines considering the uefa homegrown bottleneck because he would solve that problem plus he's very good. Clichy should stay because of the former point highlighted above but what about kolarov? I was thinking we would offload him or how do we intend meeting the 5 players homegrown quota slapped on us by the uefa?

Kolarov just signed new contract and is our strongest left back

Love Alex but Cliche gives us a good choice of options. Both great. We are lucky to have them both. Long may it continue.....

it was the one area where we could rotate, although kolorov upped his game over clichy last term. now we have sagna that position too is now covered. fernado and a partner for Vinny and we are sorted.

Agree that we are blessed with cracking options at left back. Clichy has better pace than Kolarov so can be used when we are playing against teams with fast right wingers or forward players. Clichy has good distribution and keeps the tempo of play very high, one of his main strengths for me is his ability to make space for other players with clever movement

I believe Kolarov is the stronger of the two players, I think you would be hard pushed to name a better left back in the Premier League. I wouldn't swap him for anyone, he has a cracking shot, excellent free kicks and set piece delivery and deadly crosser, add to that he is hard as nails and one of the lads to boot. He is also strong defensively as the statistics showed when comparing left backs.

We now have Sagna to cover Zabaleta at right back, I see him as a more defensive right back; he may not generate as many assists as Zabaleta but he is good on the ball and has loads of experience. Fingers crossed our full backs can stay fit this season as it is one of the most crucial and demanding position in our current system. I should add that I hope that Richards stays aswell; a fit Micah Richards is as strong as any other right back in the league.

Played very well today, one of the best players on the pitch. Only negative is he can't cross. Rarely see a defender play that well out of position.

Pellegrini obviously had this in mind when he started Clichy over Micah in preseason, knowing that Zaba and Sagna wouldn't be ready.

Was over used in Mancini's last season, and last year we saw the benefits of a rested Kolarov, so this year we should see all four full-backs firing on all cylinders.

Kolarov a better option than Baines.Overatted is Baines and he would cost us over 25 million.
This home grown quota is our biggest problem. We need better value for money than Baines. Cliichy far better value at a quarter of the price.

He played better today than last Sunday .
Still gets out of position a lot at right back .
Better today . But it helped that Vinny and Martin back as centre backs .
