Is nuclear war inevitable?

6,500 miles ??
And nobody knows where in the world these subs are.
They could launch a Trident missile (with upto 16 warheads ) from the depths of the Pacific Ocean and easily be in range of North Korea.
And France,UK and USA all have nuclear missile armed subs in their fleets.
As I said, our sub would need to get in range

It’s also why getting on another planet (and naturally fucking that up) is vital for the survival of our species.
don't worry.
when we finally arrive, there will be already-established local inhabitants who will want to sink our ships and call us immigrants who should fuck off back home or argue that we should go to the nearest planet to where we are fleeing from.

Lol. Very good

And an Ohio class sub has twenty silos, so that's potentially twenty Tridents, each carrying up to sixteen independently targeted warheads, any single one of which is an estimated ten times the destructive power of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The maths are mental. Any single Ohio class submarine, if fully equipped, and if all the warheads got through (which is apparently unlikely, though) could easily take out every really big city in Russia or China (or the United States for that matter) and still have some over to take out many cities of, say, 500,000 to a million inhabitants. As for Europe, well, given the density of population, it could be basically incinerated in the first instance and then made uninhabitable by the fallout, air and water pollution, for decades and decades. In one complete strike.
Man is a really strange animal. We've got ourselves into this position in well under a century, which is a nanosecond in geological or even evolutionary terms.

More likely than the missiles going up (initially) is a crackpot state providing some lunatic group a nuclear device that will be used as a dirty bomb. A hit in Tel Aviv would result in Tehran and Damascus warming up rather quickly.

As a child of the 80s I was scared shitless by a drama called Threads simulating an attack on Sheffield. It's the proper stuff of nightmares.

The only people who have nuclear weapons are a select group of countries. These weapons work in a similar way to the nuclear weapons used on Japan, but orders of magnitude more powerful.

The principle of mutually assured destruction still stands I think. They are last gasp apocalyptic weapons with very secure command and control systems.

The real worry is material be used to make a so called dirty bomb, with radioactive materials placed around an explosive conventional core. A very crude device but would cause much terror. Even these wouldn't cause a nuclear winter though.

There was something on C4 a few years back about a destructive solar flare wiping out electronic and power systems. Within a day food supply chains had collapsed and people were killing for supplies. A major solar event is long overdue, think the last one was in victorian times.

Also, the Earth's magnetic field has a habit of reversing every few million years. Again the effects would be as bad as the solar flares.....

Then there's asteroids.........

Mind you there have been massive extinction events throughout history, and life has survived. These may have been caused by seismic activity, climate change, the rags and dippers.......

But the point is human species have only been on the planet a few million years, modern humans only 100 - 250 000 years. Proper Johnnie come latelys. Perhaps we'll make first contact with an intelligent peaceful alien species and see the error of our ways!
