De Jong, the man who can't pass and doesn't move forward, setup the assist for Agueros goal versus QPR after carrying the ball ten yards, and playing a nice give/go with Sergio.

Too many FIFA players, not enough football watchers.

It bugs me when people say De Jong can't pass forward... when he passes forward IN EVERY SINGLE GAME and he has a very high pass completion rate. Then they say he is too defensive, well yeah, he's clearly instructed to be by the manager and if he was told to push forward he would, he doesn't have a phobia of crossing the half way line or anything.
To be fair when he and Barry play together they have a tendency to both sit too deep which seems to frustrate the manager at times. That said both of them are quite capable of going forward and partner Yaya very well.

I might be jumping into a conversation here and getting the wrong end of the stick but are you suggesting that the passage of play you described above means that De Jong offers us an offensive aspect to his game? Because I disagree I think, like many probably do, he is a very limited player. He's excellent at what he does, one of the best, but limited nonetheless. I would love to see him stay at the club because he is a fan favourite and sometimes a player who excels where he does is exactly whats required. He wouldn't be in my starting 11 the majority of the time though and if a good enough offer came in it would be hard not to accept it.

NDJ is quality. Has a fantastic passing range/accuracy/conversion rate, rarely gives away possession, often wins back possession and covers every position in the defence when all but Lescott go roaming. Very key part of our team and unless its 20m+/he wants to leave then Mancini won't sell him.

I've been a big critic of De Jong in the past, just because he is limited. However he had a fantastic end to the season and didnt kick up a fuss (that we are aware of) when he didnt start a home game for the first half of the season.

I wouldnt say the Aguero goal showed an offensive side though , he walked 10 paces unopposed and gave it to Aguero. However this is what we want him to do really.

Suppose we forget that De Jong cost us goals from interceptions aye?

Don't just watch MOTD to get opinion of Tiote either. Studied his play as part of training for youth team as it happens.

As for De Jong being this great passer, can I suggest you look at Carrick, a sideways player. We need penetration from midfield to attack. Ramires is the perfect player for the role I have in mind but Diarra is getable and so too Tiote. Watch Ivory Coast games to see his link play with Tiote. Of course we could pretend that De Jong is a Alonso now for passing, just because he wears a blue shirt.

Insulted at the FIFA jibe btw, if you disagree then fair enough, to insult shows your level. #justsayin

-- Wed May 23, 2012 3:56 pm --

Barry does what your saying De Jong does. He doesn't get the plaudits tho.

20mill for a player with a year left, nice one ;)

"fantastic passing range" is overstating things a bit...

The standard we have reached now...we need every player outside maybe one "stopper" in central defence to contribute to the offensive side of the game.

Full backs who can overlap / attack as well as being solid defensively...
A central defender who is comfortable bringing the ball out of defence...
A "defensive" midfielder who can combine forward breaks with his other reponsibilities...

NDJ is the sort of player MH signed because we needed to protect the defence + we were often getting battered by better teams...

In games where we need to break down the opposition...a player like Alex Song at Arsenal sets the benchmark for what a "defensive" midfielder can also contribute going forward (check out his number of assists..esp to RVP)

Very happy for NDJ to remain part of our squad...and I like him as a "closer" in tight games we need to see out...but let's not build him up into something he isn't.
