Yeah true. No need is there, last year we had 4 quality CBs and ended up with Fernandinho stepping in. Let’s learn from our mistakes

Come on. That happened because :

A. we had a freak situation where 3 of them were injured at the same time
B. we had 3 fullbacks and a freak situation where 2 of them were out, so one of the CB's had to play FB.

this season we are getting more cover at fullback, we have more a much better DM than last year fernandinho in phillips who could cover in that position needs be.

By all means replace ake but don't pretend like if things go as planned we're not gonna have a disgruntled CB who doesn't get playtime.

Yes but if you start with 3 centre back we only need to lose 2 to be left with one. Or if we lose one centre back we are lrft with 2 playing every game.Why not have 4 when we have room in the squad for 4.

It is keeping the 4th one interested that is the key.

Freak situations but happening often in a couple of years? I added the 4th doesn’t need to be world class, but someone capable of stepping in when needed and happy for that role. Stones is always on and off with injuries, Dias with a couple of problems last year and that’s without considering possible suspensions and the sheer number of games we will play. It very nearly cost us the league last year having to play Fernandinho and that’s with 4 very good defenders, anyone happy going in with 3 I can only admire their optimism and confidence.

But again the hardest part is finding one. I wouldn't be shocked if after we have signed Cucarella (or alternative) we are done. I am not insinutating that we aren't looking for one.

Of course that’s it, finding one and happy knowing the role but I am sure that calibre of player is out there, we convinced Ake when we had Stones Laporte and Dias….

Couple of years ago a rodri Fernandinho cb partnership too. Doesn’t have to be a world beater, but half decent cover who can help to step in. Unlike defensive midfielders

Pau Torres would be decent but not many are really keen on that option and he is still part of Spain's national team.

City will probably use 3 at the back more often next season too. It won’t be hard to convince a top cb to come in. City have Pep and the top level team that anyone would love to play for.

Example, Pau, Spanish, would probably love to play under Pep and with his national team partner, Laporte.

Have a look at the number of CBs of opponent squads that play 3 at the back, eg Chelsea. We won't do that.
Btw, we want to dominate matches with a proven and - as they say - very complicated system. We won't change that for fun.

Ake just had been relegated with Bournemouth and the Netherlands hadn't qualified for the Euro 2020 finals. It was a good situation for him to move to us.
