**Fairly even split as to if City will start the season with 3 specialist full backs or 4 but most reports suggest Cucurella is a Mendy replacement and Zinchenko will also be replaced if he leaves. No new Cucurella news today.

There’s loads mate and I’ve explained why a few times now. That’s if Zin leaves.

Im not trying to be right or wrong just giving a summary of general opinion on BM to save readers time.

No apologies I’ve confused you. I don’t mean twitter. I mean the original plan (see below) was to have 4 by bringing in Cuc. it’s just that Zin looks like he is going too now so to my mind the plan remains the same and I haven’t read anything to suggest that we are happy to go with 3.

Cucurella is the Mendy replacement. Zin would presumably be replaced in his own right. The idea was Zin and Cuc on the left Walker and Cancelo on the right. Key to having conventIonal full backs instead of inverted to help Haaland. 4 specialists not make do and mend. The idea being with orthodox wing backs they can whip crosses in rather than cut inside. If we were to play Cancelo (primarily right footed) on the left it wouldn’t work and Haaland doesn’t get the first time cross.

That was the plan originally so we might start with three full backs and cover but probably not. Have to see. Which is why on the summary I mention both as possibilities because they are both being discussed on here.

The above is my opinion as BM poster but it’s not on the summary for that reason. It’s there because lots of people think both are possibilities 3 and 4 dedicated full backs.

The news and my opinion are irrelevant it’s just a summary of of what the BM reader would think was going on if they had the time to read the debates that I do most days!

I hope we get a good, young right-back to take the pressure off Walker.

Cucu/Cancelo on the left and Walker/New-Recruit on the right would be a perfect summer in defence, with no CB changes. I'm assuming that 93.20blue was mislead, and that there will be no "big name" this summer. My theory remains that we are saving the cash for Bellingham next summer.

Thanks for your opinions mate but you are presenting some of them as established facts. Nobody on here knows *the original plan*, for the simple reason that Pep and Txiki are unlikely to post here. There are reasonable guesses about our plans, that's all. Personally, I don't think we will sign two FBs.

In the above post, yeah perhaps. In the previous one he was just summarising the discussion on the last bunch of pages, as I read it, and 3FBs or 4FBs has been common. We had the same cycle of 3CBs or 4FBs a few days ago.

Well I’m not tying to. Yes I don’t know Pep. Just like you don’t know him either. There are just as many reports that City want 4 dedicated full backs as 3. In fact I can’t recall any saying we are happy with 3. Again I put both down as possibilities.

The plan (yes they guessed too) was explained by a number of reporters and some posters on here when lots of people (including me) queried why we were after another left back instead of help for Kyle on the right. They might be wrong they might be right.

What was reported was that we wanted Cuc whether Zin stayed or not…that would have been 4 full backs had Zin not left. Plenty of posters on here can see that Pep might still want 4 full backs and that if Zin leaves we would at least try to sign two replacements.

I’ll try to make it look less like my opinion going forward …its only meant to be what is being talked about as possibilities on here.

Putting aside thinking the club will go into the season with 3FBs again when we lost one early last year, which you are not alone in, do you think the club will go into the season with 2 spare squad spaces, and a 2 player smaller squad than last season, which was already a small to the point it was a struggle?
 
I don't get the debate...Cucurella was targeted months ago as a replacement for Mendy...Zinchenko decided to take Arsenal up on their offer this week...the fact that we haven't secured Cucurella doesn't then turn him into a "replacement" for Zinchenko...Zinchenko will now need to be replaced, not, however, by Cucurella but by someone else...it could be Raum...it could be Villa's Mitchell...it could be someone from the youth ranks like Wilson-Esbrand, but it has to be someone...some on here are saying Zinchenko is indispensable yet are arguing we don't need a 4th FB, which prior to Mendy's suspension that's exactly what Zin was...
