Our glaring weakness is centre back and add to that Rodri not being a patch so far in filling Fernandinho's position and the great man himself being 35 and his legs now showing it. Unless we address these problems this season will mirror the last.
We’re not going to buy another in Rodri’s position already, I think that we’ve got to trust that he, like many before him, will show their true form having had a season to settle.

We have brought in a lot of players from abroad, unsuitable physically for PL football, over the last 10 years. No idea who is responsible.

There doesn't seem to be any consistent reasoning behind the way we use the young players either.
The players brought in are potential only, and will either make it with us or be sold for a profit. Not rocket science the business model.

How they transition is the hard bit, but again fairly simple, they need to be bloody good and have a bit of luck.
The problem lies with no opportunities to play against men, which is a huge step up regardless of how talented you are.

Rodri will be fine when defence has some pace in it

Hopefully but the issue is that he's, at times, leaving said defence exposed because he isn't good at stopping counter attacks. His pressing game has been erratic and he cannot recover. Rodri would be brilliant for a Barcelona or Madrid, I still have strong doubts that he'll ever really work out here. A great footballer but wrong fit.

I agree, a top quality centre half will make a huge difference. Rodri's problem is his lack of pace and mobility. Maybe Pep has Ake pencilled in for the holding role? I'm not sure with our high line way of playing why we sign players lacking pace.

I'm feeling the same. We're such a good side with a couple of major issues and not addressing them this window rids me of any real enthusiasm for the season. We haven't solved the fundamental issue of playing against counter attacking sides.

It does have the feeling of Pellegrini's last season where we kept playing a high line with Demichelis in it with predictable results. You'd go to games knowing exactly where we'd struggle. The 3-1 home loss vs Leicester in particular was absolutely gifting it to them.

Can’t disagree, but hopefully our pressing game returns to a high level which will again help him.
Fingers crossed

This bothers me as well. There are players who develop chronic problems because of lack of cartilage. I think Micah was badly affected by this. It's an unknown.

I think it was about a year ago that people said Aguero is now pain-free and we will see a better player. I forget when exactly this was but it didn't last.
Different injury

Yeah that season, you just kinda knew how games would go. Losing 12 games and finishing on 66 points was dreadful. I'd have to agree about the same feeling this season, there seems to be no enthusiasm. The Lyon result, the failure to capture Messi, Pep not yet signing a new deal. There is no buzz going into the new season that makes me think we're ready to take back our crown. We've made a couple of sensible signings but certainly not signings that could swing an 18 points difference our way.

It’s a pity that Alaba apparently has no interest coming to England. He would solve 2 problems immediately as he plays midfield and left back and supposedly prefers midfield. If he plays left back for us he basically sits in midfield. Of course for those games Pep prefers to play 2 in the middle he can play beside Rodri or Gundogan.

Isn't Alaba demanding crazy money ? I think i saw his wage demands - they were eye watering.

Neymar isn't a dick, he was racially abused, as the weekend showed. He is world class and would walk into any top team. Not that we will ever be able to get him.

How is it that we wanted Messi at 33 but think not at 34 because that's too old? Not like he will stop running or fail to kick a ball about. Would give us 2 good years and bring a lot of off field benefits to the club. If it can happen we should still go for it imo.
Neymar is and has been a showboating , cheating dick long before the weekend
