Lets be honest, alternatives is CIty's forte. Rodri was alternative, even KDB was alternative (to Reus), Aguero was alternative (to Sanchez), Dias was alternative, Gundogan was alternative (to Pogba), Delph was alternative (to Wilshere), Robinho was alternative (to Berbatov), Danilo was alternative (to Alves). Of course then there is Rodwell, Sinclair, Garcia alternatives which were disastrous. Also Laporte whilst not alternative, took us 18 months to get.

Alternatives have worked out very well for us no doubt, but there also this lingering feeling that we don't often get our first choice targets.
This is a self fulfilling prophecy.

If we had signed Sanchez, he would have been an "alternative" to Agüero. If we had signed Berbatov he would have been "an alternative to Robinho".
Of course we aren't going to sign the first player we are linked to every summer.

de Bruyne was not an alternative to Reus. That is genuinely, completely made up.
There is an argument that KdB was an alternative to Isco, who we had missed out on 2 years previous, or Pogba who we had passed on moving for that summer, but those are still a stretch. Robinho wasn't an "alternative" in the way you are implying either. We had 5 simultaneous moves on deadline day as a star signing was a pre-requisite for the Sheikh Mansour takeover. We bid for David Villa, Berbatov, Robinho, Mario Gomez and Samuel Eto'o IIRC. Robinho was the one who accepted, if Berbatov had accepted we may well have signed both.

There would be absolutely no point in getting Ings! Really don’t think after khaldoons interview that we aren’t ready to rock to be honest
Maybe they thought it would be easier. You can’t say they are not trying to sign our main targets though but it becomes extremely difficult when spurs are demanding 150 million for Kane while Aston villa are asking for 100 million for Grealish.
