Ivan Toney

I think the bigger issue is him betting on Brentford to lose in games he wasn't playing in.
If he was betting on Brentford to win when he was playing, he is just going to try a bit harder. That's not cheating.

but what if other players are involved and part of the bet then we are talking big money, also if it's oversea bookies and match-fixing then its No lose win win win,

if you are just taking on the bookies then they are not daft and will see it a mile off and flag it up straight away,
Even in the old days of a ring/gang of people placing small bets, they would smell a rat and not be fooled twice,

this is not just one person and his addiction because we know other players have been flagged up and fined or banned before, the best way to cover it up is to shout addiction and the player needs help, Sorry its Match fixing and cheating the fans and the game, How hard is it to see that Premier League players doing something strange and missing a shitter or scoring with the defender or keeper making a howler,

its a cover-up by the FA and this will not be the last time a player gets highlighted, Somebody else will just move up the ladder and be the main player and control what needs to happen,

Extremely lenient this Barton got worse punishment than him and Barton should've got longer than 18 months too, in my view Barton should've got at least a 3-5 year football ban which would've affected his management career.

It's doubtful with the high wages received nowadays but you also honestly can't be certain he hasn't had a word with a teammate, before then betting against his own team to lose it's total madness the punishment should be far more severe.

He's a Muppet I don't think footballers should bet but I can see how boredom might've set in how someone with an addiction can need help, those sort of people are the ones who should get Toney's given sentence here with the very best of help to overcome their addictions. Toney though to bet on his own team to lose and having previously starred in a video of himself shared online calling Brentford shit, the guy is clearly an arsehole of the highest order not that it factors in to the punishment he should've received, he should've faced a far longer ban than this purely based for trying to deceive the FA in the manner he did on its own too.

At first I thought he's just fell down a rabbit hole and needed help to break the cycle but even with that his current punishment could've been harsher, betting against his own team along with the attempted deception he tried to pull is a wrongun, they 100% gave him a very lenient warning this is not punishment it's not even amounting to a slap on the wrist as far as I'm concerned.

They also should've enforced that if he wishes to resume his career he has to go to gamblers anonymous meetings once a week too, if he fails to turn up one week ban him for another week see how he likes that... this on its own would probably be the biggest deterrent for future cases like this.

Could create a big mess.

It is still cheating because he has insider knowledge of the team. He knows the conditions running up to the game, how prepared and fit the team is. Put it this way, if there are players in the team who are an injury doubt then that impacts the odds in the market - say De Bruyne and Haaland are both only 50% likely to play, then the market's odds for us winning that game will have the risk of them not playing built in and so they will likely be lower.

Toney can use insider knowledge like that to his advantage and choose to bet on them to win in games where the conditions in the run up are more favourable. Therefore, he is beating the market odds with insider knowledge. You only need a small edge over other betters to beat the market in the long-run.

Ivan Tony is a dickhead… A very talented one but nevertheless, he knew the rules and abused them (daft as they are) and now he’s paying the price ..
As far as I’m aware he didn’t climb out of a window to avoid a drug test though, same ban length … !

What sticks in the gut mate is his whinging about being "Snubbed" by England and now we know why.

Well argued but it's overly generous to bookies. In horse racing you can bet on your own horse but you can't bet against it. Ultimately it's a question of integrity, which can only be maintained by stopping players and coaches betting, but that's Undermined by having gambling companies sponsor teams.

You could use the same argument against club members attending an open but members only training session making bets with insider knowledge.

Ultimately there is only one logical way to crack down on footballers betting, and that's by telling the bookies to fuck off and stop all sponsorships with gambling companies.

Unlike Horse Racing Football doesn't need Gambling and can survive and thrive without it.
