Jack Rodwell

he did decent, but the moment i saw him and yaya in the middle i was worried. both players are box to box midfielders and they cant balance each other in a 2 man midfield. i think people are really underestimating the balance barry brings to the team. I think he could be a good backup for Yaya, but I dont rate him as defensive midfeilder at all

Poor debut by the young lad. What annoys me the most is not the pass that led to the goal, but that he didn't have the brain to just take the yellow card and stop their counter attack. And that goes for the other players close enough to just take the god damn yellow card and stop them.

Just baffling, its like the whole team turned their brain off.

Could have gotten a 6 if not for the pass who kinda ruined the whole game and let Southampton believe.

There is no way you can give him 7++, there is two players that maybe could get 7, and that is Tevez and Nasri.

Absolute bollocks every piece of your article !!!

It was a bad mistake for the goal, and he probably should have taken the yellow to block them off, Barry certainly would have. However, I agree the majority of your post is bollocks!

In the first half he was the best player on the park for me, hard in the tackle, athletic, strong, quick, used the ball well, good touch, comfortable with both feet and while he did play a lot of "percentage passes" he was more positive with his passing than De Jong, and moved the ball quicker and made better decisions than Milner.

He's not quite yet got the class and intelligence of Barry, and he's not yet anywhere near De Rossi's level (very few are) but after Yaya and Barry I'd say he already looks our best back up player for that position.

I've been reserving judgement on him until I've watched him play closely, and I was very encouraged by what I saw today, especially in the first half, 12m for him at 21 looks like an absolute steal.

Considering how little time he's been with the team I thought he did really well, the 'problem' seemed to be understanding how to play/react to the members of the team around him and that is something that has to be learnt over time not something you naturally have.

People seem to be berating him for standing off while Yaya did the same but I think Yaya is more at fault for that than Rodwell considering he's the senior player and should consider that the guy on his debut might not want to charge out of position and let someone score in the area he's meant to be covering.

All in all, a good debut and I hope we see more from him over the season.

That tackle in our penalty box at the start was class!
Wasn't too adventurous with his passing and unfortunately his mistake led to the goal but as others have said, he's only been with us a few days, give him some time training with the squad and he'll do well for us, wouldn't have a problem with him starting against similar level opponents.

everyone keeps excusing the bad pass because of how far it was from goal...the point is, we had 9 players in their box...you have to be EXTRA conservative with your passes in that situation. there was no reason to rush...give vinny and joleon a second to sag back. even when i play fifa, that's one of the most common ways i concede...a bad pass after taking a corner. it's such a vulnerable situation.

anyway, that being said, i thought he showed real promise today. it wasn't a kun-like debut, but i was satisfied. thankfully his mistake didn't cost us, and if he learns from it, then i'd go as far as to say that i'm glad it happened.

exciting first match. we showed grit and composure when we could have got down on ourselves...just like champions are supposed to. let's go.

Should have just chipped it into the box. I think when Jack begins to feel comfortable expressing himself we will see him come alive.

I like him. Clearly shows if he can make it in the Champions League, he can easily displace Barry and Nigel for a spot.

Others will give him slack for not showing creativity but I believe it's Mancini's wishes to keep it simple.

Impressed overall with Rodwell (aside from the under-hit pass). Thought he showed real potential and fitted in well. Played good accurate passes.

He is a holding midfield player, who was being asked to do most of it on his own, and in his debut match.
Couldnt understand why suddenly we didn't play two holding players (yaya didnt give much help in that area) when we were debuting a young player?

Problem still exists that lescott is too slow and not comfortable enough on the ball - he makes mistakes, and as a result we have to give him cover by playing two holding players in front OR three central defenders. That is why my priority signing this summer was a world class central defender.

Now that I like.Definately moved the ball quicker than Nige (and I`m a big fan of him) and for a debut had a very assured game.

He looked ok but seemed unwilling to really leave an impact on the game. Continually passed sidewards and backwards and pass over responsibility to his teammates.

One of the criticism from Evertons fans of him and a similar criticism of De Jong by City fans is they pass sidewards too often slowing down the tempo of the game. Hopefully this was due to nerves and he is more positive in future games.

The mistake is just one of those things. Hopefully it wont affect him. For me there is still space foir a deep lying playmaker in that position such as a De rossi.

more often than not players like rodwell are told to break up play and get it to our creative players asap, whether thats forwards, sideways or backwards

there may well be more to his passing game but i'd much rather silva or nasri on the ball and he was constantly giving them possession today

chuffed we came back to win because he didn't deserve to feel like he was the reason we dropped points today - really promising debut for me

No doubt Rodwells main duty is to break up play but similar with De Jong if he is unable to play the ball forward we are in the same situation as with De jong in that a player like Silva, Nasri etc has to come deep to collect the ball of him slowing the pace of the attack and losing a player from a more advanced attacking position.

That to me is the main reason we are trying to secure a DDR and have experimented with Pizarro last season who unfortunately looked a little of the pace but still had a great pass on him. Still its early days and im not criticising the lad just my observations froms his first game.
