What does raising one’s ceiling mean?

The ceiling of a player, the level he can reach, depends on multiple factors including not just raw talent and athletic abilities but also diverse mental habits related to discipline, understanding various aspects of the game, thinking on the pitch, etc. etc. The ceiling of an young player is not determined in advance but depends on his coaching, on the understanding of the game he acquires. A great manager like Pep can raise the ceiling of a player by helping him understand the game better than many other young players. Messi would have been a fantastic player without Pep, but Pep helped him become the best in history, similarly to how he helped Xavi and Iniesta become all-time greats. Sancho is a great talent but he needs a great manager to make the most out of his talent.
