James McAtee

He's a good player, but I don't see him as a Pep player, Pep wants players who keep the ball, he has a tendancy to run with it too much, and then lose possession.

I hope he does well, but I don't see it being with City.
The flip side to that is that he's surrounded by inferior players at Sheffield United so may feel a need to go it alone; Grealish exhibited a similar tendency at Aston Villa. Not saying McAtee's future is with us, just that good players can adapt their game to fit our system.

Fair enough. I think we could have accommodated him but it’s probably too late now.
As a club, yes probably, I like him as a player, but what I like and what Pep wants are probably worlds apart, so I can see why he was allowed out on loan, it remains to be seen if he'll ever play here again, and I don't think this loan is going to help that much.

If Guardiola was going to accommodate him, then I think he would have had to have started on the wing and done his learning from there. However, he probably saw Palmer was ahead of him in that regard and the arrival of Doku would have been another warning sign. I can understand his wanting to return to Sheffield, but it’s just a great pity that we couldn’t have arranged something with Brighton.

Brighton we’re reportedly interested in McAtee before they signed Fati.
I know there was talk of Palmer going there on loan but McAtee would get little playing time with Brighton.
They sent out something like 20 players on loan themselves.
He'd only play matches like carabao etc., same as if he was still with us.
I thought he played OK today until Sheffield United collapsed.

There is a very good player in there and clubs want him as they know he has huge potential. I reckon that had he stayed he’d already have been on the park in recent games, including the Champions League game, but we’ll never know. I hope things turn around for him there, but if things get worse for the Blades, which they well might, then I hope we act and find him something else in the window. I had hoped he’d come over to play for AZ Alkmaar but hey ho.

He enjoyed his time there last year, so I can see it too. I don't think he'd have got much game time there personally, Palmer would have got more, and more than he'll get at (relegation threatened) chelsea ;-)

You're dead right. Huge potential and seems to glide over the pitch. Excellent close control.

Its difficult to get good loans with premier league clubs.
I think that McAtee and Kabore are the only 2 players that we have on loan and look where those 2 clubs are in the league

I can't think of any of the top clubs that have brought a young player in on loan in the last few years from another Premier league club.

I'm someone with big doubts about whether he can make it with us and today prompts some questions for those who saw it, as I didn't.

I understand he started well and looked really good. What happened after that? I know the team isnt good, but he is a part of it. Did he go missing? Did Newcastle realise he was a threat and put someone on him? Did he keep looking for the ball?

MOTD showed a good run and cross from him before Newcastle started on their goal binge. Not sure that it is worth trying to judge him on the remainder of the game as Sheffield seemed shell-shocked.

The big issue is whether the Blades will make a managerial change and, if they do, whether the new manager plays McAtee.

I think the lad has character and will make a success of the loan.

He probably needed a mid table Prem loan.

He's shown he can do it with a top Championship team that bosses most of the games which is what we do at a higher level.

What he's going to get/show being constantly on the back foot at Sheffield isn't going to help him or us.

For the first 20 minutes he was arguably the best player on the pitch and Carragher was suitably impressed.

Sadly, he just couldn't get into the game once they started conceding silly goals. However, he's definitely Premier League potential.
This post made me pull up Peacock to watch the first 30 mins of the replay. [BTW, I might be the only one in the entire USA with a rooting interest in Sheffield United to click that replay button, lolz] JM helped create 2 solid chances at the back post in the first 15 minutes. JM was fine until I turned it off down 0-2. Kinda disappointed in Vini Souza's performance tho - looked too plodding for the prem.
