James McCarthy

We still need a better defensive midfielder, Fernandinho isn't a natural defensive midfielder. McCarthy looks solid for Everton.
 
Too much money for McCarthy rather we go for Ward Prowse. He would be a better signing. IF we do sign McCarthy he will do the simple things well but dont expect him to be a player to take the game by the scruff of the neck. I think around better players McCarthy will look better than he is.
 
Totally hypothetical, but without that buyout clause in his contract Delph would've cost ~20 million pounds himself. We aren't going to find any cheap homegrown players that aren't just roster fillers.

He looks solid in a defensive two and porous in a defensive one usually.

He dominated our midfield in the league game at etihad and fa cup final for Wigan. Can't really remember him for Everton against us. Scored and man of the match v rags other month was very impressed.
 
Gotta be honest, I'm not an avid watcher of other clubs, but isn't Mcarthy more of a wide midfield workhorse, that can tuck in if required, (ie Milner) rather than a specialist DM?

A specialist DM is an absolute priority in my view. (Even more so than DeBrune, or the, so called, "problem" left back spot).

We'll have no problems scoring goals this year, but we're also going to concede a bucket load if we don't get someone in with a bit of pace and aggression to help Fernandinho protect our back four. Fernando clearly doesn't have the attributes required, imo.

Both our title winning seasons we didn't have a specialist dm in the first team. Think we need some one like Ferna Pogba is ideal. For 5m extra we could've bought shneiderlin whose better and just a year older than mccarthy. Fernando is fine as a squad option. If we get Pogba no world-class dm is going to come to sit on the bench.
 
I've watched him a lot at international level, he's nothing special at all, a vastly overrated player. A big no from me.
 
I don't think specialist DM's work in our team at all. I guess if one was good enough they could make it work, but we need a runner to cover space behind rather than a big lug who's going to sit there and hamper our passing game like fernando and Garcia have both done to different degrees. Another fernandinho, younger and better is what we need IMO

Coleman is overrated. There's good reason no one's pulled the trigger yet.

That's a bloody stupid thing to say. Have you seen how bad the other 10 players on the field were?

McCarthy is a very competent cog in a machine and if put in our middle he'll do a hell of a job.
 
Delph was capable. McCarthy is not.

Being Irish I'd love in Irish player too but this would be ridiculous for all concerned.

We need someone like ... a young Senna who's definition of a DM is not to give free kicks away constantly.

Have you guys seen McCarty play? He is a complete clogger.

I was hoping years ago that he was a Gerrard type player....but he has settled into being barely better than Whelan (and not the Ronny one).
