January transfer window

IMO it is all down the squad size restrictions of 25 players. From memory we are on the limit as far as players are concerned and if we sign a loan player for the rest of the season it is then a question of who drops out to accomodate him.

We only named 24 (non-U21s), including 9 homegrown, and one of them was Nimely. So we have space for at least 2 signings if we wanted, even if both are non-homegrown.

Depending on their respective injuries, a right full-back is the only position requiring immediate cover.

Exactly this. With the amount of games left in both league and cups Zab is surely going to pick up another injury or tire at some point. Richards isn't a viable option for cover as he is made of glass. We could do with picking up a right back, even on loan. I am surprised people can't see this.

The problem with full-backs is that the amount of ensuing work makes them susceptible to injury and tiredness, so with Richards and Maicon having offered so little in the last eighteen months, it's a rather miracle Zabaleta has lasted so long. Were he to be injured for the remainder of the season- hypothetical I know- it would seriously shorten our title credentials.

Jordan Cousins.
Can play DM, CB and RB. Young, English and should be pretty cheap. Play him in the smaller matches where we're coasting or if we have any injuries. Shouldn't threaten Yaya or Fernandinho's playing time but should be a good, hungry stopgap and could hopefully grow into a decent squad player.
My mate who's a Charlton fan massively rates him.

Seamus Coleman, Calum Chambers, Sam Byram... All right fullbacks, all young, all homegrown (I think) and all seriously talented. Chambers and Byram are also tall and young as well, so they can develop with the squad.

Either that or grab Serge Aurier from Toulouse. Gun, and he's only 21.

Giliano Wijnaldum from FC Groningen is pretty handy too, and also tall and only 21.

The left side has to be fixed. Liverpool were exploiting the left over and over again, especially the lack of pace by Lescott. He could not recover from the high line at all, and Suarez toyed with him.

Not neccesarily in January, but we are a LB, CB and defensive/central midfielder away from having a pretty perfect squad imo

who should be in the frame Big O?
I'd take Coentrao for LB and Matic or Matuidi could easily do that midfield job. Don't know about which truly world class CB is really available though

He's physically ridiculous, but he still is a bit of a work in progress from the defensive side of things. He'd probably be a fantastic partner for Kompany in time, but he still has wrinkles that need ironing out regarding rashness or being a bit too keen to get the ball. He'd cost a fortune, but I can't think of too many better CB's who might be available, he really has all the potential to be one of the best centerbacks for the next decade.

If we had him, Kompany, Matic, Yaya and Fernandinho in the center of our team then we really would physically bully everyone though!

hope the speculation that he's stitched up for us is right then - thanks!

Think we're fine at left back tbh Kolarov has looked decent recently and Clichy is still a top player. Would also rather see Jason Denayer (reminds me of Kompany) get an opportunity at centre back rather than see the club spend yet more money on a replacement once Lescott leaves in the summer. Rekik will also come back next season from his loan. Would be good to see the club try and put some faith in youth, something Chelsea have failed to do.

Central midfield is the only position we don't have any quality depth imo, not seen much of Matic but he caught my eye in the Europa league final last year. Matuidi or Fernando would also be decent options. Would have loved us to break the bank for Gundogan in the summer but that looks unlikely at the moment.

Priority is a DM, then after that get a CB. As has been mentioned, Matic, Mauidi, Fernando are all good options, and it sounds like the club is targeting someone for this position so that is good. Not sure about center back, heard Mangala and Zouma as possibilties but don't know a whole ton about either. Hope the club makes two quality buys for these positions and we will be well placed to push on in the new year and continue this fantastic form.

I think the club will bring Rekik into our squad next season so I doubt we will buy a CH now. Demi will do for now.

Priority is another CM.

I can see more outgoings....Boyata and Garcia.
