Javi Garcia

The Guardian article is complete nonsense. He makes up a role, defines it, then tells us Garcia does it, all without a single quote or actual article of evidence. No quotes from a single manager telling us that that type of role or style is something they're looking for.

FFS, he's good at "getting in the way"? This is serious analysis? The entire premise is that he does a bunch of things that aren't noticeable, and this is why he's great, but somehow the author is able to notice them?

I thought Garcia looked pretty composed at CB, albeit in a match in which we weren't really tested much. I'm still not convinced he's got the mobility to play in the midfield, but I do think it's possible he'd make a great CB for a team such as ours where having the ability to play the ball a bit is a much needed tactic.

I'm not saying you're wrong in this case, but you know that's generally how these positional names get created, right? I mean the term "sweeper" came into existence well after the game was created and someone had to figure out first what the player was doing (I believe it was an Italian player whose name escapes me at the moment) and then describe it as it hadn't really been done before. What I think the author is trying to do is describe what Busquets does and see if it applies to other players.

I agree. Which is why I'd maybe buy into it if there were quotes from Mancini or other managers (even former managers) talking about this and possibly providing some real evidence. There's absolutely room in this sport for new positions to be created, but an author who just makes one up and provides no evidence to support it faces an awfully large uphill battle with me

So let me get this right:
With Garcia in De Jong's place, we are not conceding more goals right? And in just a handful of appearances for us, Javi has already scored as much, or more, than Nigel so he's obviously more useful in our attack/set-pieces than Nigel was.
Javi as well is a far more versatile player capable of playing in several positions, which could not be said about Nigel.

Yet many here say Nigel is better DM than Javi?

I don't get your logic at all. In fact, I doubt it's your intellect talking and instead it's your heart. Nothing wrong with having a soft spot for a player, but try to stay rational will you.

And if the management shared your view, Nigel would have stayed and we wouldn't have gone after Javi. But I guess they are also wrong.

Jeez... just give Garcia a little bit more time will you? He's already proving he's making us a harder team to beat and with every week he'll become better.

I agree with this. There seems to be a lot of sentiment surrounding NDJ which is understandable as he was a key player and fan favourite under Hughes but if both were in the squad today I'd say Garcia would be picked ahead of him, which would be my choice too.

Both players offer something slightly different but in my opinion Javi is the more complete of the two and is still settling into the team and league so will only get better.

If only he ran around a lot like Scott Parker or Lee Cattermole.

Gareth Barry and Michael Carrick aren't mobile midfielders and yet they're two of the best midfielders in the Premier League. Their brains make up for their legs.

Edit: You can add Sergio Busquets to the list of non-mobile, but excellent, midfielders.

Good against slow shit players but against players who know how to play football he is shit.

Todays game a selection of his errors were:

Outmuscled by Suarez and Henderson thats right Henderson.

Couldn't clear the fucking ball which lead to their goal.

Was beaten in the air by their players all to often considering thats meant to be one of his strengths.

Had 10 yards on Downing and still couldn't catch him.

Missed an interception right at the end which led to them having a corner right at the death.

He is simply put not good enough for this league. And don't say he needs more time because time won't fix glaring errors in his game.
