I dont think hes quick enough for the premier league, hes too one paced, doesn't intercept or anticipate danger, best asset is his aerial ability.

He was doing both these things on Saturday. He certainly is slow, however, and if any opponents make quick transitions from defence to attack, he could be vulnerable (as we saw last season). However, with a quick player like Ferdie alongside, that's much less of a worry.

Mostly disappointed in Garcia last year, there were the odd games where I can remember him having a decent game and thinking he was adapting, but the next game he would be back to looking off the pace. Hopefully with a full pre season with the squad under his belt and a bit more knowledge of the league, he can start to read the game and make up for his lack of pace.

This belief that he is used to a slow, unphysical, possesion based game is utter nonsense. He came to fame playing for Benfica, who don't remotely play like that. Despite the common belief, Portuguese football is nothing like Spanish football. They play all out attack with vast amounts of runners from midfield. He was at his best playing as the holder, giving Gaitan, Witsel, Salvio, Bruno Cesar and co the licence to fly forwards, along with both fullbacks. The problem he's had so far is that unlike Witsel, Yaya has made no attempt to get back or help out defensively, meaning he's gotten overloaded.

You simply cannot play a midfield 2 if one of them isn't defending, it will make the one player chasing shadows look poor, while the lazy guy is strolling around so far away from the play they avoid the blame. Let him play alongside someone with energy like Fernandinho, Rodwell or Milner, or play him in a midfield 3, then he can be a top player for us, but if we hang him out to dry playing in a two with Yaya then he'll get continue to get exposed

This is spot on. Put Garcia next to Rodwell or Fernandinho and he'll be good, I'm convinced. Reads the game well, fills gaps well, never gets beaten in the air.

The excellent Javi Garcia ?

According to Pellegrini in todays MEN, Garcia can excell at CB.
He said he has no problem playing him there. And had done a lot of work with him, in the week before the West Ham game.
Also said he was very good against the Hammers.

Now I think he gets a lot of undeserved stick on here.
He's not our best player obviously. But he's not our worst either.
Very good in the air. Solid in a challenge. Distributes well.
O.K. he's not the quickest. But that never stopped Booby Moore being one of our greatest ever players.

I'm not suggesting Garcia would get a shirt when everyone's fit. He wouldn't.
But he's a more than usefull back up.
And isn't that what we're supposed to want. 2 players for every position ?

Pellegrini seems to be stamping his ideas on the team now.
Performances are definately improving.
And three of last seasons also rans. Garcia, Kolarov and Nasri are more to the forefront of the new managers thinking.
As always it's a game of opinions.

Re: The excellent Javi Garcia ?

Now that Kolorov is playing well there is need of a new person to bash ;-)

In all seriousness though...he's not that bad...he was brilliant in Portugual...perhaps he is just taking time to bed in over here

Certainly watched a lot worse in a blue shirt over the years

Re: The excellent Javi Garcia ?

I cant believe you mentioned Bobby Moore........

Garcia played better on Saturday and deserves credit for such but lets have some perspective, they hardly provided the biggest attacking threat did they?

I would replace him in a heartbeat if possible.

Re: The excellent Javi Garcia ?

reading twitter 10 mins after the team was announced, my god you would think we had Ian Brady in the team, never read so many hate filled tweets for one of our own

Re: The excellent Javi Garcia ?

We're spoilt that we have VK as everyone else pales in comparison
However I can imagine centre forwards would be dreading playing against VK, but rubbing their hands in anticipation with the thought of being up against Garcia

Re: The excellent Javi Garcia ?

He did just fine against a limited West Ham attack and if Pelle keeps working with him and improving him he could be useful back up. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't recall him giving it away once on Sat.

Re: The excellent Javi Garcia ?

I would much rather see Boyata get a run in than Garcia, But Garcia doesn't deserve the hate he has been getting after a pretty good game against the hammers.

Wasn't comparing him to Moore obviously. Just pointing out pace never stopped Moore having a great career.

Pace is a useful attribute. But even in the PL there are lots of players who get by without being Usain Bolt.
Look I'm not a particular Garcia fan.
Simply saying he's better than a lot of people give him credit for.
And after all the only person who really matters (Pellegrini) obviously trusts the lad.

As I said before, football is all about opinions.
That's why we love the game so much.

he didnt put a foot wrong on saturday ... for once
He excelled on Saturday - held his own and bossed the defence.

Kolorov looked sharper when he came on too.

im pressed with Kolorov this season, seems a completely different player. although can sometimes go to sleep defensively

Re: The excellent Javi Garcia ?

Garcia did get caught the wrong side of Vaz Te for the Hammers goal , but i wouldn't unduly blame him for it.... the lobbed ball that reached Vaz Te was both unexpected and awkward to deal with , even Joe Hart was taken by surprise by it , and in essence it has to be said that the overhead kick was brilliantly timed and executed.

Aside from that Garcia did nothing wrong , and had a very steady game throughout.

Re: The excellent Javi Garcia ?

Had his best game in a city shirt on Saturday. Easily a 'premier league standard' performance.

Both Pellegrini and Mancini have seen fit to play him so there must be something to him.

I hope he continues improving, in much the same way Kolarov seems to be doing.
