Pep's use of Navas tonight was very good, having fernandinho pick up Hazard and keep Navas on Alonso, even if Alonso was deep kept the two of them very quiet - a flank which is usually a strength for Chelsea was nullified.

It's the kind of intelligent management that Pellegrini would never dream of an is the kind of thing that makes me laugh out loud at anyone who thinks Guardiola isn't a step up.

He does not possess the brain to play full back, defensively he's set in a winger's mindset.

Poor tracking runners, poor getting back into position when possession is turned over, out of position, wrong side.

But because his bread and butter stuff going forward, because he is a forward player, is better than Zabaleta/Sagna people think he's a revelation.

If our situation at full back shows anything it's the defensive side of things is still as, if not more important, as the attacking side. Even in a Pep team. Navas doesn't have the wits about him to do that and I don't blame him.

Navas is always diligent and his effort cannot be faulted even though he has obvious and well documented weaknesses.

It's no wonder he's been thrown into the mix because he fits the current criteria of having full backs that are complete non-entities. It would be fantastic to have full backs who can attack and defend. Second choice would be full backs who can do one or the other. The absolute nightmare is having full backs that can do neither, having one of these would be bad enough yet somehow we have accumulated a handful of the useless turds.
