Jimmy & Joe To Sign New Contracts

I don't think he'll sign a new contract by the looks of it ..... We should try to cash in now, I dunno if we can do it with FFP restrictions and the fact he's homegrown makes it tricky but a part-ex offer for Barkley sounds good ... unfortunately we are not in a strong position and I think Milner probably had some idea he would leave all along .... He doesn't seem like a money driven guy to me so I can't understand why the contract talks have been so protracted ... listening to Pellegrini it sounds as though City were very keen for him to stay and sign a new contact ...

He doesn't seem money driven because he's portrayed in the English media as a hard working professional.
If you actually look at his career, he has a history of running down contracts and moving clubs purely for money. He's not daft and I suspect he has weighed up what he has won so far, with his chances of winning stuff in the future, and compared that with his future playing time and what he can earn elsewhere.
He knows that next year we will be rid of the ffp restrictions and he's probably thinking that as soon as we can buy who we like, his playing time at the club will be severely restricted. Given that the contract we will be offering him will be performance and appearance based, he is probably thinking that the timing is absolutely perfect for him to move clubs on a Bosman and get a bumper pay day for what will probably be his final contract.
As far as Milner is concerned, signing a new contract for City makes absolutely no sense.

Come off it mate, let's be honest, he knows he's incapable of being on a par of the calibre of player we are moving towards.

More a realist if you ask me.

I don't know how else you'd describe someone who gives up playing as many minutes and as many games as Milner does at a club like City to go somewhere he knows he'll always finish behind us but will play 10 more games a season. Total lack of ambition. There have been plenty of moments in the last 18 months where you've been calling for his inclusion ahead of Nasri's as have tons of people who watch City. He's good enough to play a huge part in our squad even if he doesn't have the technical qualities of other players.

I think you're being very harsh on him and I imagine it's because you don't want to lose him. He's won everything domestically with us. It's unlikely we will win the champs league in the next 2-3 years which is all he has left at the top. He has all the money he will ever need and has played with some fantastic players as you've pointed out. Now perhaps he knows our transfer plans for the next couple of seasons and thinks, with his age, he's just going to slip further and further down the pecking order. So he'd rather drop a level and be an important first team player. I don't think you can call that lacking ambition. It's him being pragmatic and just wanting to enjoy his football for the few years he has left at the top. Nothing wrong with that and while it's a bit of a sucker punch for us we should wish him well!

You're right I don't want to lose him - but I'm not being harsh on him. That Guardian article just about sums up the two faced nature of Saint James. He has spoken with forked tongues about his extension for about a year now. The public narrative has been one about being totally happy at City "why would anyone want to leave this club" he said, but wanting to feel more involved and to play more games.

The club for their part have reacted I suspect in part to that this season by ensuring that Jimmy has played an increased amount of minutes and also by ensuring that he is judged on merit - ergo when Nasri/Navas were not playing well Jimmy was getting to start matches. This is part and parcel of being at ANY club.

The expectation I seem to be reading from most people is that he's going to waltz up the M62 and will become an automatic starter at Liverpool and will play an hugely increased amount of minutes. Forgive my cynicism but that might read well as a media narrative but the reality will be a little less heroic for Jimmy. He might get an extra 10 games a season like I said, but he'll play no CL football so you can remove that, and overall who will be playing more games in a season City or the dippers for the foreseeable future? Think the answer's clear.

If Milner doesn't want to sign a new contract which he patently doesn't, that's fine. He can do one. But planting stories in the papers about his "disappointment" at being subbed at half time in a match in which he stank the place out to garner sympathy with the watching world and paint City/Pellegrini in a negative light is a ****'s trick.

In my opinion he's skating on thin ice as things stand. City have shown with players like Nastasic if you fuck with them they will banish you. Milner is in danger of being banished and rightly so. Personally I can't be arsed with him or his humble James act.

A little harsh. Are you expecting a player not to know or act in his bet interests?

The problem Milner has is that his best position is central midfield but he can't play there for City because we have better players there, so largely he plays out wide......as he does for England. And lets be honest he's a very poor wide man. Poor at our level anyway. People criticise Nava, but the quality of Navas's attacking play is infinitely better.

I'd like Milner to stay because he is a great squad player, but he may conclude that at his age he needs to be playing every week.

I think he'll go, but only if Liverpool are in the Champions League. They probably will be if Sturridge stays fit

I'm not bothered one way or the other what is in the best interests of James Milner. I'm speaking about what is best for Manchester City. I know that for Manchester City losing a player who would normally command an 8 figure transfer fee for free isn't good. I know that for Manchester City losing an English player they actually want to keep isn't good. I know that for Manchester City to have to read articles in the newspaper which imply that the club doesn't treat it's English players with the requisite respect or somehow marginalises them isn't good.

The Jimmy fanboys and girls are welcome to lather up the "he's only looking out for himself what's wrong with that" excuses. I'm still not buying them. With each passing week and with each passing planted media story blaming the club for not respecting Milner I find myself thinking he's an even bigger **** than I originally thought he was when I first felt he was going to fuck off on a free.

He's disrespecting the club. Those who can't see it are blinded by his public persona.

Jimmy Milner can sign if he wants, he's a decent squad utility man, but i will hardly miss the bloke if he leaves. He's a footballer. Overpaid and actually not very good. Far too hot and cold. Sorry Milner fans, just my opinion of course.

i`ll go with this

I said in the post match thread at the weekend

His performance against the Gunners was disgraceful and it seemed like he had made up his mind to leave.

No big deal if he goes but we should do it in this window we cannot afford another performance like Sunday.

At the end of the day, James Milner has to do what is in the best interests of James Milner and Man City have to do what is in the best interests of Man City. If those interests do not fall on the same sheet of paper, then one side will be deemed to have unrealistic expectations of the other. Simple.

This is multi-million quid business, nothing more. We can all say Mr X is a twat, or Club Y are a bunch of tossers, but it is all emotive fan nonsense.

Milner is already a multi-millionaire who could ride off I to the sunset knowing he had a great career with some top clubs and his reputation as being an excellent utility player for club and country already in his back pocket.

City could look at his age and contributions, value them less than they once did in a FFP environment and see the need to improve the quality of their required English/Homegrown talent pool, using some of the "Milner money" to do it.

Who knows? But, what I do know is that just like when you buy a car, both sides have a number that provides them each with perceived good value before a deal gets done. I hope those numbers are the same in this instance, because James Milner is, for me, the best value utility player in the Premier League and provides us cover in multiple positions.....often all in one game!!

If it is not to be, I wish him the ABSOLUTE BEST WISHES for the work he has done in helping my club be the best it has been in history, playing football, and against teams, that could only have been dreamt of just a few short years ago.

Got it in one post
He sure did....

Can't believe a bang average footballer that just runs around is causing so much up roar on here
