Jimmy & Joe To Sign New Contracts

A little harsh. Are you expecting a player not to know or act in his bet interests?

The problem Milner has is that his best position is central midfield but he can't play there for City because we have better players there, so largely he plays out wide......as he does for England. And lets be honest he's a very poor wide man. Poor at our level anyway. People criticise Nava, but the quality of Navas's attacking play is infinitely better.

I'd like Milner to stay because he is a great squad player, but he may conclude that at his age he needs to be playing every week.

I think he'll go, but only if Liverpool are in the Champions League. They probably will be if Sturridge stays fit

I'm not bothered one way or the other what is in the best interests of James Milner. I'm speaking about what is best for Manchester City. I know that for Manchester City losing a player who would normally command an 8 figure transfer fee for free isn't good. I know that for Manchester City losing an English player they actually want to keep isn't good. I know that for Manchester City to have to read articles in the newspaper which imply that the club doesn't treat it's English players with the requisite respect or somehow marginalises them isn't good.

The Jimmy fanboys and girls are welcome to lather up the "he's only looking out for himself what's wrong with that" excuses. I'm still not buying them. With each passing week and with each passing planted media story blaming the club for not respecting Milner I find myself thinking he's an even bigger c**t than I originally thought he was when I first felt he was going to fuck off on a free.

He's disrespecting the club. Those who can't see it are blinded by his public persona.
He's a professional footballer aged 29. He's played quite a few games for City this season, but realistically he's not the first name on the team sheet and you know that, and he knows that. I hope he stays as every squad needs players, but I'd understand if he wanted to go and play football week in week out and pick up a big pay cheque as a result

You any me are fans of the football club. That matters above almost everything else and we couldn't even imagine playing for someone else, but for footballers this is a career. He has to think at aged 29 about money, and playing time.

In favour of staying: Top football. A lot of money

In favour of going: Quality and profile of games depends on who makes him an offer. Probably more playing time in a position more suited to him. Even more money. Probably make himself a regular in the England team if he plays for another top English club.

I think there's a 40/60 chance he will stay at City because the really top clubs aren't going to go in for him. It's going to be a SPurs or a Liverpool. And the odds they are in Europe are not massive. I'm sure Champions League football will be a factor for him.

Hopefully Milner signs a new contract. If not, it won't change my views on him in any way.

The guy has been an integral part to our team over the past few years and has left 110% on the field regardless of where he's played. He's not getting any younger now and in the next couple of season's, when his fitness starts to deteriorate, he will be dropped from our first team, becoming either a bit-part player, or moving to a much lower ranked team than us to get regular football - why would he do that when he can see out his contract, which was the agreed period of time he would play for the club, and then leave as a free agent to another big club (although they wouldn't be on the same level as us) and sign a 4 or 5 year contract on big wages playing regular football - in a position he wants to play.

I think he's right to leave if I'm being honest, and it's the clubs fault if he goes, not his.

Just think of how Arsenal fans act with players like Nasri, Sagna and Van Persie - that's how some of you are coming across right now.

Milner can piss off for all I care - he has done the club here -
it's ironic that this thread reaches its apotheosis just after Jimmy's worst game for us in years. We should also remember matches like Munich away last season etc etc.

Can only speak for myself but the reason it stings so much is because those matches exemplify perfectly that he still has a HUGE role to play in our squad if he chooses. I resent the characterisation of him as a bit part player. He may not be technically on a level with some of our others, but he has played his part big time and would continue to do so if he could see his way clear to stick around rather than jumping ship for a few extra quid and a dozen extra games a season.

I fear i'm bordering on become a bit of a scouser though as M18 said in a previous page so I might just have to give it a rest now. :)

In the post-Bosman era no club should pay money for a player in the expectation of subsequently selling that player for a fee. It may happen but the bean counters would be well advised not to take it for granted. If Milner sees out his contract he will have done so professionally and to the overall benefit of the club and its supporters so the club will owe him nothing and he will owe the club and the supporters nothing either.

Spot on

A contract is a two way deal between the player and the club. Both agree it.

Milner's honoured that contract, as have we.

Milner's now in a situation where he's free to choose what he wants to do again, and who he wants to play for, just as City are free to say 'thank you, but we don't need you any more' - as they did with Lescott.

It's grossly incorrect to say Milner's holding us to ransom, or 'shafting' us.

Is the correct answer.

as much as I like him, if he has made his mind up to leave, then sell him now, so we can get some money for him,
No football club can sell any player against their wishes in 2015 all they can do is transfer list them.
The players hold all the cards the minute they sign the contract

Only half agree with this.
Again, it's a contract that both players enter into willingly. The player only holds the cards that the clubs offered him in the contracts (and vice versa)
The club can choose to not play him and effectively end his career (whilst paying him).

Both parties enter into the 'marriage' together.

I don't think any club will be willing to pay much for him in the current situation, and I doubt he'd go - unless there was a genuine pressing 'window of opportunity' for him that might not be around in the summer.

Maybe he doesn't want to leave and is still in negotiations.

He hasn't fucked us over in any way. He signed a contract and has honoured it. It's up to the club and the player to reach an agreement. If they can't, he goes and plies his trade elsewhere just like everyone else.

However, if he did want to leave, he would be rather foolish to sign a new contract and then be sold as he would make considerably less out of doing that than he would leaving on a free.

It really is this fucking simple

Isnt it just
Ive never heard as much fuckin shit in my life as ive read on this thread
Milner owes city, he owes us fuck all........

Does he owe us some respect? I suggest he does. Not treating the club and fans like cunts. I think that's the bare minimum he owes us, don't you?

If he wants to leave then great. (I'm pretty ambivolent about it from a purely footballing perspective). But it's the way he's clearly trying to engineer the thing that just stinks.
