Why not keep him here and USE him.

All other top teams play youngsters throughout the season, espeicially in cup games.

He doesn't need to start, but being involved from the bench on a consistent basis would do more good for him here around top quality players than going to Stoke.

He will be second choice at best in a team that plays primarily one up front (Crouch), so may get more games but considerably more?

He would never play for us with our strikers. He has a better chance at games at stoke then with is that's a fact.

Actually playing football will give him far more experience than sitting around here, no matter how many stars he's surrounded by. Judging by Crouch's goal return he'd only need a couple of good games to dislodge him anyway.

City apparently had around 20 offers for him, so you'd guess with them having their pick of clubs for John, they were guaranteed he'd play a lot of football.
