It wasn't lack of game time that John suffered from last night, it was stupidity

Takes courage to to risks on the ball at the back and you need the confidence of the players around you. No risk, no rewards is Peps style and John is part of that culture.
He took a risk, slipped that is all. Sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you don't.

there is a time and place to take risks. Once John works that out, he will improve. Last night was simply stupidity in such a meaningful game

Not bothered about last night's game.
But the lack of progress in certain areas he has made in last three seasons compared to some of the other 'young' ones (Sterling, Bernardo, Laporte for example) in similar or lesser amount of time, makes me think he may be not become as good as we and Pep('balls') thought he will, sadly. They have made themselves pretty much undroppable, he hasn't.

It's not just mistakes on the ball. Its concentration. Its failure to anticipate danger on the pitch. He lost De Ligt from three separate corners. It's great that he tries to be courageous when in possession but his actual defending was awful too.

I think that is a reasonable summation

He looked out of sorts and it’s not that surprising considering how little football he’s played this season.
He’s still England’s best CB, though looking at his competition that’s not something to shout about.

That's why I don't like man to man marking at corners. You are always reacting to the other player and consequently a little behind him. We don't do that at City, so it doesn't concern me. He's a fine player and will continue to be so at City, regardless of his error yesterday.

Was it Alan Hansen who “destroyed” Savic a few years ago? I see something similar going on here, because he made such a high profile mistake he’s suddenly become a liability, he needs backing and thankfully he’s getting it from Southgate and I’m sure Pep will get behind him and we will see the best of him. It’s always City players to blame for England’s failures, Joe Hart, Gareth Barry, Milner, Sterling and now Stones and Walker. Who’s next on the radar, Phil Foden?

Felt for Stones last night probably trying to play the way the manager asked him to. The midfield was dire last night no movement not making themselves available you could see Stones getting more frustrated the longer the game went on
