I don't know what it is about Mangala that makes so many people wishcast about him. I suppose it's the elite athleticism, but there's no point in white washing all of the actual poor plays he made while wearing our shirt. Yes, maybe you could change a few dozen things and maybe he'd actually step up as a player but he's done very little while wearing our shirt to make it seem like that is coming. Everyone wants to point to 5 matches with Kompany when our attack was flying and the defenders had little to do as some sort of paragon of defending.

I'm not even that down on Mangala, he's been good for us when we've had him essentially playing sweeper. He's got all that power and speed and can use it to clean things up well. But he still has a bunch of lousy habits and isn't comfortable on the ball. Doesn't make him a bad guy and I'll root for him in our shirt but the notion that he's going to suddenly turn into a great defender is just fantasy stuff.

To contrast with Stones and make this post more relevant, the things Mangala seems to struggle with are things that are just inherent in a player. You can teach a player better positioning but you can't teach him to be cool on the ball or to have the instinct to step up and deny an attack. His instincts seem to be wrong too often. Stones has a bit of this, as well, but at least he has tremendous instincts when he's on the ball.

The post above on this page saying Mangala is better on the ball must be a troll. Eliaquims mother probably wouldn't even say that

Talented player, but his complacency and error rate last season were alarmingly high. And I see that as per usual when City are interested in one of their players, the bitter dippers are already setting out their stall to turn it into circus with them as the plucky victims (surprise, surprise) and us as the bullying vulgarians who know the price of everything and the value of nothing. I fully expect Stones to have to hand in a transfer request, and any eventual fee to be farcically high. If that does turn out to be the case, I genuinely wouldn't bother. There are other cheaper options out there who can actually defend

I think any sensible club will do their utmost to extract a high price for their best talents. Sometimes as the buying club it's painful, but you really can't blame them. What is sometimes unpleasant is the vilification of players after the transfer is done. No objection to Liverpool sticking to their guns and getting a high price for Sterling but what some of the former players came out with afterwards was unpleasant and unnecessary.

.....not sure if serious.....
Completely. 87% accuracy with an average pass length of 18m (a good distribution pattern in games as well). Mangala's problems are all down to the guy next to him (left back or right centre half) not doing their job. Demichalis and Kolarov have been truelly awful all season in this respect. As a result he gets pulled out of position to sort their mess out and this leaves a stack of space behind him. What's he supposed to do? Let people have a free run at goal? It was even worse when Yaya was in front of him as Yaya never got back quickly enough to fill in.
I hope Pep gives him a chance but I can understand him wanting better - Mangala isn't exactly calmness personified when it goes tits up at LB or RCH (even though most of the time he deals with the problem).
But better in this case would have to be "The Best" and Stones though with marginally better pass stats (89% ave pass 22m, has more sideways and backwards passes - hence why I think Mangela is slightly better as a passer), Stone's defending is worse. He's also not had to deal with LBs and CHs next to him who can't defend either!
