Mourinho wanted a new CB at United and bought that Bailly. Chelsea are after that CB from Napoli. Barcelona signed Umtiti.
That suggests that the clubs who have shown an interest in Stones are after a CB but haven't gone for him.
So either we have already agreed a deal with Stones and got rid of any competitors or they do not value him as high as we and Everton do.
Also, Everton still need to protect their asset. If he drops into the last 2 years of his contract then his value will plummet. Therefore, the decision is do they sell him or try and keep him long term when Stones has already made it clear that he wants out.
We have made made some serious inroads with this negotiation. With all the rumoured interest there could have been a bidding war. Yet we are in a position where we can at least try and negotiate a fee.
If we get him for £45 mil plus add ons I'd say that is a very good job well done from Txiki.
I'm no huge Stones fan, but Barca let it be known through the Spanish media, that they wanted Stones & that he wanted to go to City.
That hardly drops the price for our negotiations, which they are probably happy about, the same way they shat on us with Pellegrini.
If we had told Everton '40 mil take it or leave it' & Everton had said '50 or no deal' then both sides would have agreed to sack the deal off & get on with other business, as no way on earth is a ten mil difference going to be bridged in a cash sum, & Stones would be concentrating on being an Everton player for the next season.
Clearly they are still negotiating, are not as far apart as the liars in the media would have us believe & I can imagine you might be in the ballpark.
I could also imagine we are rather busy with other deals as well & Everton the same, which may be causing a slight delay.
