Went on the Sunderland message board to find out about Defoe's injury, and found 150 comments in a thread entitled, "Would John Stones get in our XI?" and the overwhelming view is that no he wouldn't and he can't defend.

Jack Rodwell got into that team

I hope you do not mean that. The opposite is true. They showcase a player, and for football fans they are a brilliant tool especially for overseas players who you have never heard of.

Imagine that we were linked with Leroy Sane, or Gabriel Jesus in the 1980s. We wouldn't have a clue.

They are not perfect. Players like Samaras can look good against weak opponents, and they maybe very good at one thing which they do again again and again, but if you watched them closely enough, and critically enough, you might pick that out.

In the 80-ies and before we had the Pink Final.
And we didn't need a You Tube highlights movie when we got Kazi Deyna in. Than again, maybe we should have had You Tube than.

Truth is he probably wouldn't get into their team because their captain Paddy McGuinness is as solid as a rock and Stones' tippy tappy European bollocks would only hold them back in their quest to finish 17th every season. Proper club.

I was at the reserve game when Uwe Rossler played whilst on trial. I think he scored 2 and showed all the potential RE what he would go on to become. You would never get that now – an Eastern European international player coming over for a trial with no one even having a scooby who he was. Same with Kinky – bought a few years before with no one having seen him kick a ball!

RE Stones – I’m not sure on him. If you could merge the best bits of Mangala and Stones you’d have the best player in the world but if you merged the worst of the pair of them you’d have a Sunday league player!

Expected comments about the fee - not his ability as a player. A load of Evertonians rubbishing him - must be on there because of Moyes. Fans always do this: You sign a player, he's brilliant, wait till you see him. You sell him. "He was rubbish". But Sunderland should be neutral. I think it reflects the bad press he has had over the last 12 months and Everton's defending as a team. That for me was entirely down to Martinez.

Think the multiple signings of Petrov, Elano, Garrido, Corluka and Bojinov was one of the most exciting days as a Blue, after the dour fare served up in the Pearce era.

Elano would have been a star nowadays. Granted he could be lazy as fuck but he controlled a game from RB.

It was like a revolution! I did like our Sven ;)

Im sure somone could cobble one together. Im not having a go as Stones, just I take nothing from these compilation vids that people post now and again.

I was only jesting, I'm sure there are multiple vids out there of Aleks looking the part.

To me, it's the same as a documentary. Sure you can edit it to favour the player - leave parts out and only include the best bits. On the other hand, you can only show the footage you have.

As selective as the clips are, we can clearly see John Stones has the technical ability to accomplish what Pep has just said he wants from his centre backs. We all know he'll make mistakes from time to time but I'm just excited at the prospect of him nutmegging Zlatan.

You obviously believe these vids tell you what to expect, I don,t. You obviously have a problem with that.. Care to explain what it is rather than silly retorts
You have an idea of who leroy Sane is now don't you? How did you get that? Of course they don't tell you everything and you need to be critical. What are the opposition like etc, but you think what you would know without them. A load of City fans instantly give you quite a good summary of Leroy sane from a 5 minute video. He's seriously quick, very one footed. Cuts in from the right on his left foot. Very strong and great balance etc. An eye for goal etc etc.

So, to be devils advocate. If someone were to compile a 5 min clip of Sane cock ups, missed sitters, loss of control etc (you get the drift), and IMO, the feck up clips would be more easily compiled on most players, what would be your angle then.

For me, all these vids show is what someone has done in the past. If your one of those who believes this is the normal standard of play, then, fine , but I dont buy into that

Still some way to go on this deal? The fee for Stones is not agreed according to newspaper reports that seem quite informed.

Everton value him at £50m, with City believing a deal can be done around £45m is my summary.

My angle would be I know what I am watching. You are human, give yourself some credit for being able to discern what you are watching.

I think this deal is very nearly done. The reports seem very much leaked by City because they say the same things we see with all deals (and as we saw with Sterling last season). We value him at £40m, they value him at £50m and you can imagine what we're doing right now is trying to meet in the middle, whether through £5m in add-ons or up front. We'll be very close to getting this done I'd imagine, the reports will have been fed to the media by City but will probably be a step or two back from what the reality is in order to ensure we don't scupper things.
