John Stones

if City do pay it, it will be a hollow victory. He'll have to be replaced and you'll get done. if Moshiri is as wealthy and committed to EFC as claimed, why didn't you just sell the player for £40 million which is a good fee for him, and replace him with a player you had lined up with the 12 months notice you were given from this time last year?

I am not sure City will be prepared to go to £50m for him as there might be more to be gained by showing clubs that we wont just pay whatever is asked.

I don't quite understand what you're saying. If he leaves, it'll be for £50m. We'll get £10m more than you're offering and that will allow us to improve the squad further.

I don't. Good luck keeping Stones happy considering he's lost the chance of CL football and probably a £50-70k pay rise. Don't think he'll be extending that current contract after last summer and now this

We don't need luck to keep him happy. He'll be getting a £50k pay rise regardless of whether he stays or goes.

You should pay him commensurate to how you value you him then?

If he stays, we will be doing that with a new contract.

came on as a late sub against Betis. Finished 1-1

Reports linking EFC with Ashley Williams for £10m.

We can't get pep then say you can't have who you want to do the job,i think it'll get done but we might have to pay up
Pep will be fully in the loop. Maybe he doesn't believe he's worth 50 million quid and supports the club's stance? I'm yet to meet a single City fan who thinks this player is worth what Everton are asking for him.

Why didn't you last yet when valuing him at £40m plus?

I imagine he wants to progress as a player, play in the Champions League. Play alongside Kompany and under Guardiola etc.

Regarding the fee, my argument doesn't matter now, but EFC knew a year ago he wanted to go. It would have been simple as a big Premiership club to line a replacement up. You leave it until a week before the season, or later, any extra monies you get in now, will go out again in an increased deal as clubs will see you coming.

I think you said earlier that Stones was on £30k a week. I think it's a safe bet to assume that a £50 million player will be on substantially more than £80k per week.

There is also the knock on effect of breaking your wage structure to keep a player.

How much will you then offer Lukaku who you value higher than Stones? Then what about the likes of Baines, Coleman and McCarthy when then want new deals?

Keeping a player against his will when you're valuing him at a lot of money will have a huge knock on effect.

City have walked away from the likes of Pogba because of his wage demands and how it will effect the others players.

Of course, Everton could simply keep him on his current contract and he would have to honour it, but good luck with that.

And yet he played very well the season before under Martinez. He made loads of mistakes last season. Everton just couldn't defend but you reckon that's all down to Martinez. I don't know how you can be so confident of that./QUOTE]

The same could be said of our defence under Pellegrini. It took time to build the best defence in the league and 2 seasons to dismantle it. To build or destroy takes time even if the same players are involved. Kompany went from one of the world's top 5 defenders to looking like he was a substitute at Hough End Playing Fields on a Sunday morning after a heavy Saturday night out on the keg.

I suspect the Barnsley thing won't help and Everton should probably have tried to buy Barnsley out after last summer - I suspect Barnsley would have taken £3-4m at the end of the August window, considering they'd have still had a few weeks of their window left to spend it.

If Everton want £40m for themselves, we'd have to pay £47.5m. I suspect we'd go to that, as it's below the £50m we've said we're not going to pay and it stops Stones being the most expensive defender or English player. But if Everton don't bend from the £50m at all, I can't see this happening and I think it's important we don't pay it, otherwise we'll continue to be seen as an easy touch
For commercial reasons I can't see us paying £47.5m cash, but I could see £38m plus add ons and player exchanges up to that value. Everton may not get what they want all in one go, but the money would be all but there.

Yes, I didn't mean a briefcase with £47.5m in it.

The other way out of this might be having him heavily performance based e.g. If he makes it into the final 3 of the balon d'or, they get a few million which takes him to £50m. Chance is slim, but they can say they got what they wanted and if we ever had to pay it, I suspect we'd be more than happy. Problem is, all of that requires negotiation, so it depends if Everton is actually at the table

This in a nutshell - I think the fee we want for ourselves is around £40 mill.

Anyway, thanks for the discussion. I'll pop back with any updates or ITK bits from our side. I think its in everyone's best interest to get this deal done soon and we can all move on with our preparation for the season.

So you value him at £40m, but expect us to pay £50m because you don't want to pay the sell on fee you negotiated in good faith with the club you bought him from? Seems fair :-)

This will happen. Everton have accepted the player wants to go, we want him, I assume terms are already unofficially known and agreed and now its down to the bartering. We don't want to be seen as being bent over, having the Vaseline publicly applied and taking one up the shitter and Everton don't want to come across as a kid whose just had his bag of sweets taken off him by one of the big lads at school & they could do nothing about it.

As @ONTHERUNWITHTHAKSIN said, no-one wants to lose face but I think everyone concerned knows there's a very high likelihood this will happen one way or another.
