You assume he would be happy to be 4th choice, I don't want somebody who is happy to be 4th choice.

Most of his career he's looked something of a shithouse to me.

FFS you are scraping the barrel now, but I think we might have better.

a) I'm confused, you're saying you want someone who will complain and make a fuss about not getting played enough so we have to deny Stones valuable minutes to keep him happy?
b) Shithouse, leader, the two aren't mutually exclusive- think Terry and Ramos. I'd go as far as to say that our squad could benefit from a shithouse or two, if they can play then I don't care.
c) I'm not saying it's a big selling point but it would be nice to know, if we're going into a penalty shootout with five defenders, a goalkeeper and Sterling, that at least one of those 7/11 can be trusted to score.

Better than the vast, vast majority? Wowsers, West Brom did well to get him for £6m didn't they.
Here's who I think is better in this league:

Kompany
Stones
Otamendi
Cahill
Luiz
Azpilicueta
Alderweireld
Vertonghen
Matip
Sakho
Lovren- at a push
Koscielny
Mustafi
Mertesacker
Williams
Jagielka
Smalling
Bailly
VVD

Every one of those players is from a top-8 club. I'd wager that none would be happy to come and play 4th choice for us.

Outside of that we have:
Reid- too expensive
Martins Indi- too young
Shawcross- too Shawcross

That's because it's West Brom, look at who we are offering/selling for stupidly cheap money. However when we are buying it's a different kettle of fish.
I can't remember much of a bidding war for him either. Maybe he is this top class defender but has just been keeping it quiet so as not to bring too much attention to himself.
Guess I'll find out for myself if we take the plunge..

That's true, but you also get a good indication of a player's worth by how much they cost to teams that.... I was going to say "teams that do not have too much money", but that's not true of any Premiership side now. Let's just say that teams lowers in the pecking order usually pay what a player is worth (or at least, they do more often than the heavy hitters).

Before our bid, there was reports suggesting Leicester wanted him for 10m. That seems both the right price, and the right level, for a player like him. But he could end up moving to a side that is aspiring to be champions of Europe for twice that price. That's why the reaction here has been so negative.

This has Jack Rodwell, Fabian Delph and Scott Sinclair written all over it. Why spend over 20m on a player who is only going to be 4th choice centre back? Why don't we keep Delph as the homegrown player to cover at left back and use the money we intend to piss down a drain on Evans and go and get Inigo Martinez or Davinson Sanchez?

I just baffle at the clubs decisions sometimes. How some of these people are in a job is beyond me. The club seriously needs a wake up call.

Agreed. In my mind's eye, I can see the posts a year or so down the line bemoaning the fact we're still paying three quarters of his wages while he's on loan at Bournemouth or Stoke. This just doesn't strike me as a shrewd move. Quite the opposite. At least with Rodwell and Sinclair, you could say there was a hint of potential. This guy has already has his shot at a (then) top four club, and you just have to remember the derbies he cost them to see how that turned out.
