Because Yaya and Fernandinho won't be here...

Yaya isn't a holding midfielder so that isn't even relevant. It seems woefully stupid to have mountains of attacking midfielders who can't even score according to some but have one guy in dinho responsible for any sort of protection. Look at the pre match posts full of people picking the goalie 2 centre backs then trying to shoehorn every attacker we have into the team. And on top of that they want us to sign 2 more attacking players.

This is not how you build a successful team

Yaya plays as a pivot for us so it is completely relevant.

How many holding midfielders offering protection start for Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Barcelona? (i.e., the most successful teams of the past few years)

It's not relevant because he shouldn't be there. Just because you put a player there doesn't mean its covered. If I said to you we had 4 full backs last year so we are fine would you agree? Or would you say we need better fullbacks?

Madrid,Munich and Barcelona would never contemplate playing toure KDB and silva in a 3 man midfield. For a while now we have had a problem with having lots of possession being wasteful and conceding from a high percentage of chances against us. The answer is not to stockpile short, skilful attacking midfielders or think just because you sign 20 plus goals a season strikers it automatically means you score more goals.

I'm not saying we can't improve at that position, what I am saying is that we had priorities elsewhere this summer (i.e., the full backs). If we had been more proactive in the past with the signing of full backs instead of signing three (with the initial aim of four before Alves changed his mind) this window then we could have done something at holding midfield.

We signed Bernardo as he was available and is a natural successor to David and we only have two strikers (as opposed to three holding midfield players) hence why we are signing Sanchez. Perhaps the players we want at pivot aren't available this summer?

Also, Danilo can play in midfield if required.

You can keep saying we have 3 holding midfielders but it doesn't make it true or solve the problem of suitability, so we signed b silva even though it wasn't a priority but can't sign a midfielder with an ounce of defensive nous? Because this isn't a priority?you have just argued against yourself. So we only buy our targets and none are available so why jonny fucking Evans. Was he a long term target? And Sanchez an attacking player just what we need.

Pissing myself

Spot on mate. We are extremely light in cm in terms of a ball winner and someone who dictates play. Gundogan was a top player but he's not coming back as good or better from the injuries he's had. Against the top sides we will lose the midfield battle imo. Doesn't matter what level of football it is winning the midfield battle is key. To have possession you need to win the ball and I don't think we have enough ball winners in our midfield.

Spurs sign two outstanding young defensive prospects we are signing Jonny Evans it seems for 25million or more. Bizarre

Are you a fan of alternative facts or do you not actually think we have three holding midfield players?

When did I say signing Bernardo wasn't a priority? Looks like good succession planning in that position to me, exactly the opposite of what we did with the full back position.

Sanchez is what we need, we have two strikers and we want to win more than just one trophy this season.

It's clear CB was seen as a more important area than CM this summer hence why we are trying to sign Jonny fucking Evans after all our other CB targets fell through... I don't think we should personally, but what do I know.

As an example would you rather we spent £30 million on an average holding midfield player this summer or wait and spend £75 million and above on someone like Weigl next summer?

I think this came down to seeing the bigger need at fullback and putting DM off for another year. Signing Yaya to a 1 year deal and still not extending Fern, makes me think, we've got a long term plan in place for next summer but this position could cost us points this season.....guess you cant fill all needs in one transfer window. This just shows how badly we've managed the squad the last few years.

I agree. A top quality team is all about balance fella and you need different skill sets. We have 1 world class centre back who is injury prone, 1 new left back and 1 ball winner in midfield who must be fucked. We do have a never ending number of midfielders who can play number 10 though.

I believe our priority is a defender who looks okay in a backs to the wall pub team and another attacking midfielder.

shows a total lack of good team management on our part.
