Kalidou Koulibaly

Disagree - £36m for Ederson proved to be a steal when Kepa & Allison went for double. Very shrewd business. Bernardo will come again I'm sure but still compared to some signings for a midfielder/inside winger with alot of time on his side £40m. He was our best player 18/19 season and the player of the tournament in the nations league. The Mendy tweet has scuppered this year.

In retrospect, sure, Ederson was a total bargain. However, at the time it was one of the biggest pricetags in the world for a goalie. Same could be said for a lot of our best players; bargains in retrospect but they certainly weren't cheap when you look at how the market was at the time.

Bernardo I agree with pretty much everything you wrote. He's one of my personal favourited and I hope he sticks around long enough to get his form back.

By your own admittance, you didn't have an opinion on him in the first place. You then went and actually watched a couple of recent games and decided he's no better than Mangala and worse than Stones and Otamendi.

It's just the typical bluemoon bollocks of those knowing the least about a player shouting the loudest.

Why would I have a opinion on him ???

he plays for Napoli , seen them play on champions league nights etc but not week in week out. Last month he’s been pony ? Am I not allowed a opinion ? Why’s your opinion better then mine ? We’re both to blokes on a Internet forum taking about a potential target.

sorry I don’t sing from same hymn sheet but he’s pony And not worth 80 million

Big season coming up for Bernardo, make or break in terms of his long term with us.

In hindsight, given the prices top keepers go for, Ederson was a steal. Bernardo too. Bernardo was the best player in the league last season and one of the top 10 players in the world. He managed to completely replace the quality of a player like KDB. At 43m he was a steal, no question about that, especially given that he is entering his prime.

Jesus at 28m was an absolute steal as well.

I get why you would say that but I think my definition of a bargain is evidently quite different to others'.

If we got Ederson after Chelsea and Liverpool bought Kepa and Allison then it would be considered a bargain. At the time of purchase Ederson was the most expensive goalkeeper of all time, that's not a bargain.

You can do what you want, I'm not your mum. But it's tedious in the extreme to read through infantile dross like yours when, by your own admittance, you have virtually no knowledge to back it up.

lol who do you think you are mr interesting football forum poster, all bow down to the master. You talk shite like everyone else on here, her over yourself. It’s football , it’s opinions , they are all different. Now run along and go play FIFA or what ever you do.

"At the time of purchase" he wasn't a bargain, in hindsight he was though.

Think of it this way: how much would we pay for Ederson at the time of purchase, if we knew how good he would come? We'd pay even 60m for him.

The time frame given by the moment of purchase is a bit too narrow to properly evaluate a signing - the extent to which it is a bargain.

Same with Bernardo: if we knew that Kevin was going to miss most of the 18/19 season and Bernardo would step big time and help us win the most exciting title battle ever, we'd pay double what we did back in 2017. Bernardo was a very important part of the last two titles and he cost us just 43m, less than say Sigurdsson.

Absolutely. Very promising.

But at kids level, he's a big unit compared to being a not very big unit at PL level, so it would be a surprise if he can just step in, plus he isn't as assured on the ball as Garcia (which is Garcia's only current talent imo, the rest is like mass hypnosis).
Seldom agree with Nev on anything. But on Garcia... I agree on a lot of yhzy

However I should add, that's not just one talent. It's a mix of talents. Good ball control, good vision, good awareness and good passing range. All of those make him assured on the ball. But yeah, that's the only strength he has so far.

It's as if bad form isn't allowed to happen to world class players. Either KK's had his head turned by our interest and saying the opposite to the press to keep Napoli happy when he does go, or he's in a spell of bad form post lockdown. Koulibaly's got years of brilliant performances in a challenging system under Sarri and after that against Liverpool and the like. Liverpool are not an easy team to play and he's done bloody brilliantly against them every time. He's been a standout defender for years and is recently one of the few good things about Napoli, but fuck me cut the man some slack he's allowed a few bad games here and there. Yet everyone's shitting the bed claiming he's just another Mangala. Yeah watch the recent games, but look at the years of work an brilliant games he's also had. World class talent. One of the very best CBs in the world. City should do whatever they can to strike a deal considering he's the perfect age profile for our young talents to develop into starters meaning we hopefully won't need to buy replacements.

He needs to be picked to get some form going
He was our best player last season
I’m worried he will leave which would be a big loss
If I was him I wouldn’t be happy with Foden and Mahrez getting picked ahead of me

The only way I'd be doubting his level right now is if he was picking up loads of niggling injuries and was clearly losing his athleticism but I don't think that's the case. Like you said, it simply looks like bad form in a poor season for Napoli as a whole. I'm getting sick to death of drawing parallels but there were plenty on here who were laughing at the van Dijk fee, saying he wasn't worth the money and that he couldn't be that good because he was in poor form for Southampton.

Judging transfer targets off their most recent performances is exactly how you end up signing players like Otamendi and Bony so I'd rather we look at the bigger picture.

I'm assuming they are expecting him to change a fair bit physically & that this will enable him to defend better, but even with that, he doesn't seem mobile enough for a 'shorter' cb & doesn't appear to have any particular heading ability.

I hope he becomes the player everyone sees, but right now, if he was playing against us for any of our CL opponents I'd be more confident of beating them.

True but when picked he has not looked himself, workrate outstanding but his footballing abilities poor.

He hasn't looked happy to me. The infectious smile hasn't been seen as much this season

And that business with the scouse guard of honour… although hilarious at the time... it's just not Bernardo's style

Probably just recognises Foden at 20 has everything he has plus a bigger goal threat, so he’ll be riding the bench even more regularly if he stays.

Ultimately, it’s his own fault for coming - he was a key player for Monaco, as he is for Portugal; here he’s joined a club with better, more productive players than him in each of his favoured positions, so he can’t sulk that he’s seen as a utility man.

They’ve both offered much more than him though.

We seem to forget that the best season Bernardo had in City's jersey which may also be in his career was last season. And he played regularly in the midfield. I don't believe he is doing badly, if he has a regular run of games in the midfield we will see the Bernardo of last season.
