I think Phillips is better than you give him credit for. Obviously these things are difficult to predict in terms of how a player adapts and how they improve. But the key thing for me is that he played in a positional system as a lone pivot and in a team that in many respects were even more 'adventurous' in their attacking, and therefore even more exposed at times defensively.
Rice is an absolute non-starter. The fee alone makes it just a pointless conversation. The Tchouameni hype train is also a non starter. They're talking about 80 million euros. That's not something I would ever see City doing for a kid with a couple of seasons of football under his belt. I agree that City tend to buy competition, and not back ups. But I also think that rotation is part of the game when you play as many games as we do.
Phillips for me would be more like Foden, Grealish, Sterling, Mahrez in that either him or Rodri could be picked and there'd be little argument in the selections as both of them would be more than capable of performing in 90% of the games we have every season.
